I'm sure that quite a few people are beginning uni in the next fortnight so I am making a call out for knowledge! :D
Any tips for meeting people and coping in the first couple of weeks?

Basically, just get to know your flatmates for a couple hours when you first get there, and then head down the union (all together). Union will be rammed, so best place to meet people.

Is it a good idea to bring a couple of beers so that when people pop into your room you can offer one?

Yeah, I did that when I moved in, took a crate of bud with me (not my usual choice, but a leaving pressie of the neighbours ;)).
Certainly helps to break the ice. :thumb:

Just make sure they're chilled, else people might hate you. :p ;)

Yeah best bet is just to be nice to your neighbours, try and meet and say hello to the peeps you're gonna be living with for a year, then hit the union.

Probably not a good idea to score with hallmates on first night- didn't do it myself but heard some nightmare stories of peeps getting it on with their neighbours then it being awkward for like 35 weeks....

True, when you attend university you get an honorary degree in Alchology. :D I know I did.

I also passed The Hangover Workshops, and vomit tutorials.

I arrived in halls, dropped all my boxes of stuff on the floor, went to the nearest supermarket (happened to be safeway) where they were taking advantage of freshers week by selling loads of cheap alcohol :D

Bought a few bottles of beer and a half bottle of whisky. Too much alcohol = others robbing the lot, enough = instant approval, not enough = becoming a scavenger yourself and sitting in one of your flatmates rooms drinking their beer.

It's no problem making friends, if your in halls of residence it's impossible not to, in a house/flat your still gonna find it difficult not to make friends. Remember mate, it's uni, you all feel kinda the same arriving, so you'll probably have a very high concentration of overfriendly people around you making an effort even if you don't!

Dude! Arriving at uni is awesome. All the crap about niche groups of friends and the like from the school days flies out the window, everyone is united by the call of unbridled boozing and other.. pleasures*.

    * lectures, of course! :geek:

Where are you going, by the way?

Aye, its easy enough to meet people if you're in halls. I'm sure the Uni will have arranged lots of Freshers type stuff, your halls will probably run pub crawls and the like for all the new arrivals. Mind you, be sure and pace yourself, I know so many people that went completely OTT for the first two days and spent the rest of the week in bed recovering :)

If your uni has a societies fair its normally a good idea to get along to that, find some clubs/societies/teams to join (always a good way to meet people).

Also, a few drinks to loosen up is a good idea, but throwing up on your new flatmates shoes probably isn't going to endear you to him/her!

As for the not scoring with flatmates, I'll leave that to your own discretion... ;-)

One last thing, by the end of the week you will be so fed up with answering the following questions that you'll probably wanna hit someone :) :

    Name
    Course
    Where you're from
    Where you're living at Uni

    Have fun

MDk don't worry about it too much- I'm sure everyone else will be a bit scared too (if they told you they weren't, they lied!). It'll all be good and after a few days/weeks you'll be wondering what the fuss was about!

SuperFly, bit of a co-inky-dink there, I've just finished my first year at Warwick Uni doing Comp-Sci! I can give you some real pointers now!

    - Maths for comp-sci is crap, but pretty easy as you've already passed Maths at A level.

    - CS118 - Programming is taught by the best lecturer in comp-sci, Steven Jarvis. That module is a good way to pick up easy cats. It's also quite cool.

    - CG152- Hardware is also cool, but make sure you have a good lab partner, cause you're going to be doing a lot wiring on a patchboard with him/her and it gets compicated if you can't trust each other.

    - Learning a bit about linux shell scripts now could help you a bit with CS120, it's a bit daunting if you've never used linux before.

    - CS123 is an absolute nightmare of a module. It's functional programming taught by the most left-wing hippyish lecturer I've seen. Make sure you know your **** for this, cause the exam and the coursework were the hardest thing in the first year for me. Everyone did so poorly they had to heavily moderate and I passed with 23%! For the coursework we had to design a runtime engine for a custom language called SCOOBY (yes after the dog) in SML. Boy was that fun.

Make sure you get all your coursework done and submitted a day early if it's to be submitted electronically via BOSS. BOSS crashes every dead-line day without fail.

    Now for the good stuff!

Every room at Warwick has a network port and you get an awesome connection speeds - the whole uni is connected at 100mb/s. We also had a file sharing hub using DC++ and the file sharing was rampant, as the connections are unmoderated. When you arrive check out http://www.duefo.co.uk/ to see if the hub is being run again this year - other wise you'll have to use the windows sharing jobby.

Without a doubt the Warwick Uni drink is "purple", aka snakebite and black. It's Cider, Lager and blackcurrent and is cheap in the union. Drink lots on your first night. It gives you cool purple vomit in the morning.

If you ever run out of food, you can always "acquire" some in Rootes halls- it's so big you can get in and out with your "acquired" food without being caught.

Sometimes you can sneak into the union without paying thru a window outside the Graduate bar. Also you can go into the pool area and the band practice rooma and stay there while they clear the union out, and get in free that way.

If you go to the gym on a thursday (take your uni card you get in free) you can watch the cheerleaders practicing. Yay.

Well that should get you started for now. Warwick Uni rooms are all mostly nice - Westwood rooms are the largest, Arthur Vicks are the poshest (ensuite bathrooms), Cryfields are the smallest and Rootes are average.

What halls are you staying in?
