OK. I want some opinions on this...... I have a CNPS 10X that I want to make fit onto my motherboard a little better so I can get front to back flow. At the moment it is not possible as the RAM is too tall and will sit below the fan.... I need to shith the whole thin toward the back of the case by about 20mm..... As I can not change the position of the CPU and I do not want to remove the RAM heatsink I have decided to see if it is possible to re-shape the heatsink to suit the layout. I will have to try and bend all the heatpipes back to make this happem..... Assuming I do not bend the copper CPU plate do you think this will be possible???? Has anyone tried this and suceeded??? Opinions welcome.......... p.s If I destroy the Heatsink I am not to worried as I have a spare.....
If you have one spare, then just try it. If i were you, i'd make a clamp system that secures over the copper base, keeping it flat. then using a blow torch, evenly heat the heatpipes where you want them to bend, be careful as these contain a gas/liquid used for heat transfer, don't want it blowing up in your face! when you've heated them a bit, try applying smooth - equal pressure to the top of the heat sink pushing it away from you in the desired direction. you want to get something like this: ......[HS] <-- push ........\..\ ........___ PS: I actually did this on my AC freeze64 - it worked.
Thanks notmeagain. That is what I am after. I will admit I am a little worried about using a blow torch in case the pipes rupture so I'll tread carefully when I am doing it.......
Maybe try a heatgun first and see if it gives enough elasticity for the bend, some of them can get some relatively high temperatures. Its doubtful granted but can't hurt to try. If it doesn't work then take the plunge and hit it with the burnyburny.
They're only copper - quite easy to bend. I seem to remember when Nexxo bent some heatpipes he didn't mention having to heat them at all.
This is all going to end in tears! And probably with a few scorched fingers throw in just for good measure as well.
You mean, copper, pressurised with gas/liquid, yeah? Copper's pretty easy to bend but it's also really easy to break when it's thin-walled pipe; Nexxo correctly pointed out that he bent them a little at a time, but also pointed out that he could buy replacement pipes if he pierced one, which OP probably can't...
i wonder if things would be made easier by first removing all the fins from said heatpipes. this would allow you to get your fingers around each pipe for a better grip while bending...plus that way you dont have to try and bend all the pipes together at once.
you could use a small pipe bender.. or rig up something like a pipe bender like a round pipe to bend the heatpipe around- we had to use them a lot in welding and machine and tool.. looks like it'd be perfect for that.. might even be able to use wood like a dowel if it's easy enough to bend
Thanks man. I'll have a look how easy they are top remove........ Will make the job a lot easier if I can......
