hi guys, struggling to find the best 10" tablet. as there are about a million of them. Could do with a hand picking one. I mainly need it for browsing, video, emails and what not. Pretty much run of the mill stuff. storage wise im not too fussed but 16GB without expandable storage is pushing it. budget wise id like to keep below £400 if possible or even lower but im quite open if its worth it. Ive been looking at asus transformer pad infinity asus transformer TF300 Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 Samsung galaxy note 10.1 Nexus 10 open to suggestions but please not ipads !!! while i appreciate that they are good devices i cant bring myself to be locked in to a system where apple dictates what i can do with the device. Many reviewers also massively overlook some basic flaws like no GPS in wi-fi models, no expandable storage, weak multimedia support, high price tag and propitiatory accessories that carry high price tags also. thanks
Im very happy with my Nexus 10 so far. Is there anything in particular you would like to know about it?
I bought my geeky wife the Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1for her birthday last month and she loves it! I think it has gps too?
For me, it'd be down to the price of the Tab2, Nexus10 or Xperia Z. Xperia is waterproof, if that adds anything for you. The extra bits Samsung add to the UI on the Tab2 can actually be useful. If the Nexus10 is similar to Nexus7, it offers a stock Jellybean 4.2.2 with no fancy frills as standard. Whichever's cheapest.
Generic models have quad cores 2gb ram and retina display for sub £200 now. Spec wise they are quite commonly even better now than the big brand models. I'm not sure about the retina display as film size and bandwidth required makes them a little impractical for most. We got a zoostorm playtab 10". Its okay; colours are nice but the its obviously much less responsive than my sisters nexus. Its beginning to suffer a little slow down now after 3 months. For £120 (?) we're happy with it.
After the price cut yesterday the Surface RT would be a good option, £279 for the 32GB model with £359 getting you either the keyboard or double storage. Had one since launch, really like the hardware, the OS is pretty decent too though there's no question that the lack of apps may be a problem, especially without legacy x86 support to fill the gaps. Full flash support in the browser certainly helps though. With the price cut I'd definitely consider it as a viable tablet. It also helps having access to the control panel and registry editor to change any setting you don't like e.g. mine no longer demands a password when I unlock it (but does on boot)
i was shopping round for one a few weeks back for my other half, and i couldnt find anything that could beat the asus memo pad for price and features.
With haswell just round the corner don't you want to see those tablets? If your defiantly going ARM I suggest going to pissy world and having a play with windows RT*. I was astonished at how well flash ran (some dell with a qualcom cpu) when I tested it with the escapist. I own an ipad (1st gen) and find it really annoying that I can only have one thing on screen at a time, think chat apps, having to watch adverts fullscreen and not being able to call up the calculator. I'm not sure if android has multiple onscreen apps. * If windows RT hasn't been updated it won't have flash.
well i jsut pulled the trigger on the Sony Xperia Z tablet so should be here tomorrow ill give you some feedback later on tomorrow on how it is
The Surface RT or the Surface Pro if you can find one cheap enough for your budget - nothing really comes close to being as awesome.
Surface RT, definitely. The apps are getting better, and if you visit XDA forums you can jailbreak it and run things like Rainmeter, 7Zip, Synergy and Quake I, II and III which have been ported to ARM. And Flash allows you to play browser games like Samorost and Samorost II, and Windows 8.1 comes with IE11 with WebGL. It's a solid little device. The only drawback is no Minecraft and no Steam games.
not fussed for games - i find them kinda pointless and get bored after 5 mins Looked at the app store and the windows one is mostly useless which makes it hard to choose. the surface RT looks awesome and the office support is a big plus but thats all i feel it could really do.
I'd be looking at the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Sony Xperia Z tablet. Both are quad core with 2GB RAM, and both have expandable memory via microSD. Have a look at the Tesco Outlet on eBay as they have some refurbished Note 10.1 for £259. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAMSUNG-GALAXY-NOTE-GT-N8010-CORTEX-A9-2GB-RAM-16GB-HDD-10-1-WEBCAM-WIFI-TABLET-/290934077987?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item43bd05ba23
Just got my Sony Xperia Z tablet and i have to say OMG what a piece of equipment. its absolutely beautiful and its so fast it blows my nexus 7 out of the water. I have had all the ipads for the first till the fourth and i have to say this is sooo much better
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 for my son last year and I play on it a lot. It is the 16GB WiFi model with a micro SD card as well to store movies on (for the car, at home he streams from my NAS). It has GPS built in. It is a great device for browsing, emails, videos etc (my son seems to live on YouTube watching Top Gear and Minecraft videos) and was even better value with the Samsung cash back at the time. There are faster tablets as mentioned about but for the price I got it at I can't think of anything that has a better build quality. My daughter has a 7" version and both kids are really hard on kit but the Samsung's have really stood up to the abuse. The catch is that the cashback is over and the price now puts it into tougher competition. My personal view is that your decision should be based upon the app ecosystem you want to follow, the screen resolution/quality for your chosen purpose and the speed you expect the tablet to run at. Determining those would eliminate a number of alternative options and would then give you a narrower choice in what is becoming a crowded market.
I want to buy that also as it looks awesome unfortunately I would have to caution people against one if my experience with the Xperia Z is anything to go by, great phone, poor support my UK bought (direct from Sony) unbranded sim free Xperia Z has not received any OS updates for a couple of months despite all the phone vendors shipping their Zs with 4.2 in the UK and have received an number of other updates, they seem to be ignoring UK Sim free users Hopefully the Tablet Z is a better experience and they don't ignore UK here also, i'll probably buy a Google device to be safe from this experience from now on as its quite frustrating, shame.
unless anyone can suggest a better tablet at £220 i think i might opt for the samsung. I cant bring my self to buy refurb even though thats a good price on ebay for the note model. I know its not the fastest but it can handle HD content for displaying and browsing when using chrome rather than the stock browser is better. i guess it would be mainly used for web browsing, films, emails, silly apps, maybe some work on word, excel etc (google docs)
