For the free options, I much prefer Avast to AVG. I can't even tell it's running 'cause it's in quiet mode, and barely uses any resources.

I used to use AVG Free Edition, but I found it made a lot of false positives. Now I'm using AntiVir Free and it's great so far. Smaller memory footprint than AVG as well.

AVG free didn't stop fake antiviruses like Antivirus XP 2008 from installing on customers' computers. We use Kaspersky for everything and it does a pretty good job, but it has wrecked a couple of systems. (I would make a fresh install of Windows then put the AV software on from the start so you know you're clean and nothing will get messed up)

I'm using Sunbelt's Vipre at the moment (on Vista x64 and Xp Pro SP3) because apparently its the anti virus using the least amount of resources and thought id grab it and try it out since while i love kapersky its just too much of a resource hog to leave running all the time without slowling to a crawl

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2379&tag=rbxccnbzd1 and this is the performance test that persuaded me to try it out and it definitely is much MUCH better than any other anti virus ive used when it comes to being resource light
