    Hi guys,

I'm going to uni so can't carry a CRT around the world trying to get to a room on the 100000000000th floor of my tower block thingy.

So, I need a 17" TFT capable of playing FPS games like doom 3 and unreal tournament 2004 without any noticable flaws like ghosting. I REALLY can't spend that much, but can't opt for a CRT if I want to have a back in old age.

Recommendations please and thanks in advance!

What about something a bit cheaper? Ebuyer do some that are something like £175+VAT... Are they likely to be pretty poor?

The LG may be a little over budget but you definitely get what you pay for. May be worth saving a bit longer.

can anyone tell me if i will encounter ghosting with the model you all seem to go for? It would be shame to get that considering my pc's graphical potential.

I would very much doubt it. That model and its successors are much loved. its the only non-samsung tft display I would reccomend.

Right... I know this is a dead thread, but it's better than starting a new one for this simple question.

General conscencous is that the LG 1710B is one of the best 17" TFT's around, but the question is, is it available in black? :)

[edit] Found out it is (it looks like it, it's the LG1720B. Any difference? I can't see any...) [/edit]

Seriously - its a GOOD investment. Best £320 i spent march 03 was buying my LG1710b.

Is it as good as a 19" monitor for the same-ish price? I'm really torn between this LG TFT and a very good 19" CRT.

Does using a none native resolution greatly affect the performance of a tft, such as ghosting. If it does them i'm greatly relieved, if not them i'm very dissapointed. I say this because i recently bought my dad an LG 1710B to replace his Samsung 152T, and before i set it up on his system i naturally wanted to try it out as i want a tft myself. I installed no software or confirgured anything just literally plugged it in(DVI) for 5 mins. At the time it didn't occured but i fired up CS which i play in 800x600 and the performance was unbearable. ghosting was ridiculous. It is only now that i realised that there may have been no issues at 1280x1024, can anyone (bindi) confirm this? I'm planning on getting a 172X

I cant say for you - ghosting is a very personal problem. I play mostly at 1240 or 1024 never below. The problem is it uses 4x as many dots for a pixel at 800 so it looks shite. What little ghosting i may find i do have rarely, i dont really notice or care. Although i just recently switched back to VGA cause im flicking between pcs, and DVI makes a BIG difference to image quality over VGA, especially on the desktop. Im so used to a TFT now i find a CRT unbearable.

I run it at 1280x1024 and its perfect. Anything lower is iffy.
At the time i bought it, i did so because it was the only 17"tft within the price i was looking at with DVI. It does make a big difference.
