Hi all, I'm looking for some feedback on the following low-profile (but non-HTPC) setup.

    My requirements are:

    - low-profile (primarily for space saving, not HTPC)
    - speed (as much as physically possible without costing the earth)

    My main concerns are:

    - which low-profile cooler to fit mATX mobo to adequately cool overclocked GA-P55M-UD2 with i7 860 ?
    - enough/correct airflow?
    - which and how many extra fans in the case?
    - will these components fit together?

    Proposed system:

    Lian Li PC-C37 case (http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=220&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=64)

    Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2

    Intel i7 860

    2 x Corsair 4GB 1600 C9 Dominator-cooled

    ASUS 1GB GT220 DDR3 (low-profile)

    Samsung 1TB F3

Scythe Shuriken Low Profile CPU cooler (http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/034/scsk1000_detail.html)

    Background info:

Although I've had basic system upgrade experience over many years, this will be my first full system build - so I haven't got much of an idea about space or cooling requirements for most components.

    Thanks heaps in advance. :D

I've just transplanted the PC in my sig into that case (minus the HD5770), not yet bought a cooler to fit so I can't give you an idea of comparative temps, though it seems pretty well laid out.

I'd suggest you invest in a modular psu, I've ended up filling the 3.5" bay under the dvd drive with all the spare cabling, which limits you to one hdd bay or modding.

I can tell you there's roughly 70mm clearance from the top of the cpu to the top panel so the shuriken will fit.

You should be able to get a good throughflow of air, make sure the shuriken fan is pulling air up and venting directly out of the holes on top of the case, and fit both the 70mm fans that come with teh case on the side directly next to the cpu socket, that way you should get a constant stream of cooler air directly to the socket, and all the warm air vented straight out and give you the best shot at any ocing. you won't really see the benefit of any additional fans as there's not realy anywhere else unobstructed to mount them.

What are you planning on using the pc for though if not a htpc - any gaming you're severely limiting yourself with that gfx card, and by proxy the case as it's half height, are you wanting to save space vertically, or just space in general vs a tower? (thinking along the lines of the pc-v351 or similar which would allow a bit more choice in coolers for oc'ing and more powerful gfx cards to do the cpu justice)

    thanks for the info

yeah need to save space vertically .. and no, no gaming, just want some damn fine performance for photoshop and general apps.

I'm now giving some thought to trying out a corsair h50 and hanging what would be 2 fans + the rad out the back of the box in push-pull config, for even better performance than an air-cooled option
