i've decided to resurrect this thread because this post still sticks in my mind as perhaps the stupidest thing i've ever heard. my opinion is no greater than urs nicky, so i'll just state it in equal bearing:

nirvana started an entire movement, frontlined a genre, shifted the epicenter of rock to seattle, and made one of the greatest albums of all time [Nevermind]. Now...I'm actually NOT a huge nirvana fan, but I feel like sticking up for them because dismissing them for no legit reason just seems idiotic. I'll take any real criticism of them, however leave the fake stuff for another thread.

Um...No they didn't...they were the most media friendly group of a movement and they (as admitted by themselves several times) did nothing but rip off old Meat Puppets songs.
    That one is debateable.
And Korn shifted the epicenter of rock to bloody California...doesn't mean I'll thank them for it ;)
    Again....Incredibly debatable...

To me, Nirvana were overhyped, undertalented and unoriginal.

so the fact that Dave Grohl was their drummer and is now the guitarist/lead singer for Foo Fighters, a pretty good band, means they were undertalented? Sounds fairly talented to me

Well I don't rate Foo Fighters either and I think Dave Grohl's only average as a drummer.

as much as it hurts, I'm gonna have to agree with Penski here, even though I like Nirvana. The only real "movement" they started was the one for "grunge" kids to not have to take showers. and he made doing obscene amounts of heroin ok as long as you wore 8 layers of clothes to hide how sickly thin you are. oh, wait, but that's only for the "stomach cramps." please...

I hear ya kiljoi. I'm not saying you have to like any of it, be it their music or the grunge scene they started, but they definitely had a large impact on music and can't be passed off as just another band

Oh, I'm not saying they didn't have a large impact. And I'm not saying that I don't like them or the 'grunge' scene. Hell, they are one of my fav bands. I'm just saying that it wasn't the impact that most people attribute to them. There were a lot of other bands at the time that helped music and society flow the way they did at that point, but hardly of them get any credit for it. That just kinda irks me is all.
