Someone should probably make a sticky about MSE.

    +1 for MSE

I used to use Avast and it's good, but MSE is totally unobtrusive, so it gets my vote now.

Do people still pay for AV software? Seems crazy to do so (in a domestic environment anyway)

I used to live by AVG but it let me down and I haven't trusted it since. I now use a combination of Avast for Virus protection and MalwareBytes pro for active internet security (although Avast has resident shields for all networking aswell).

+1 on this although your gut feeling about a file or site can only get you so far. sometimes even the most careful people suffer virus attacks which is why these programs arise in the first place.

In conjunction with a good antivirus/firewall, very good. On it's own? No good IMHO.

avast, extremely easy to use, never had a virus whilst using and 1 click turns gaming mode on so i dont have to have any annoying messages or virus pop up alerts mid game and if you do get a problem that avast cant deal then you just remove the problem with malware bytes anti malware

Avira just saved me from another Trojan in the past couple of days, and the Premium version let me do thorough scans in under an hour but I'd happily give MSE another go on a non-essential PC, if it's had an update.

+1 for stickying an AV thread, as experiences will change with each new version.

MSE or Avast really, they're both good. I tend to use MSE now more, because it isn't ever obtrusive, the updates are combined with Windows Update, and the scans/entire program are nicely lightweight. Also, MSE is never trying to get you to buy the full/paid for version either...
