Hi Guys - I currently have an AMD HD 7970.. could do with a little more bang for my bucks.
Possibly thinking of going over to Nvidia, as games seem to more and more tied in with Nvidia -and the promise of directx 12 being a boost over Mantle.

I have around the £300 mark.. what would you suggest?

I'd say a 4GB GTX 770. They're fast, overclockable and that 4GB is pretty handy for the latest games.

Save up a bit more money and wait. Only the 290/290X and the 780/780Ti are faster than what you already have and I'm not sure you can get any of them for around £300 (could be wrong, though) unless you went second hand.

If I were you I would wait one more generation. Current generation cards in the upper mid tier are really not a big enough performance jump that it should make a huge difference. I somehow doubt your card is struggling unless you are trying to play on 4K or something.
Otherwise, depending on what titles you play and the rest of your set up you might see if you can find a cheap deal on a used 2nd 7970 for a performance boost with crossfire. But it all really depends on what games you are interested in and if you don't need to do anything else with your current build if it would be at all worth it.

Why would you want to go from a 7970 (R9 280X - same thing) to a GTX 680 (GTX 770 - same thing with faster memory and core clocks) when they are near enough on par with each other?

If you really want more bang for buck. Pick up another 7970 for around £120 and CrossFire the beasts.

imo save more and wait for maxwell, or buy a second 280x/7970 for CF if your setup can handle multiple cards

do not buy a 4gb 770, non reference vram on a video card is a waste of money

HD7970s are still very fast. Even the GTX 780 is at best 20-35% faster. The 7970 should last you for a long long time.

    7970 and 770 perform pretty identical. 770 is just a 680 rebrand.

You would be looking at the 290x 780 ti to really see a major gain over your current card. 2nd hand 290x hover around the £300 mark not saw any 780ti on sale recently to give a accurate account on there second hand prices.
