one of my mates from work has asked me to find him a laptop for £300. He won't be gaming (has an xbox360), but it will be his primary computer. I need suggestions.

I'm not familiar with UK tech shops but I did convert the price to pounds. Its a bit more than you had in mind... but I can't in good conscience suggest a cheaper model.
Hmm that's a tough one. Without going with netbooks, the cheapest I can find a new laptop with anything better than a Celeron is £362. I suggest refurbished units or eBay. EDIT: Perhaps something like this?
Loads of CD2 lappies for that sort of money. http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/507105/FUJITSU-SIEMENS-RECON-LI-2735
those fuji models feel like there made of paper, my girlfriend had one, parents knew nothing and paided too much for a recon one, its since been traded in for another, even they realised the mistake after purchase. All i can say is, with vista installed on it, it crawled along with its cele and 2GB of ram, but build quality is that cheap i got worried every time i picked it up for fear of it tearing in half like a wet paper bag, shocking! It made my 3 year Acer feel like a panasonic toughbook! Recon units are probably the best place to look, dell's come up on aria alot for good money.
This thread screams Ebay I've found a few good Core2Duo laptops on the bay for just under £250 (BIN price)
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/range.html?t=nb&c=home&r=E15 No idea about the chasis. http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/p...tro-a860?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsdt1&~lt=popup Can be configured with a dual core for £310 delivered. Dell chasis are very decent.
Lenovo N500, Dual Core T3400 2.16GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 15.4" WXGA, DVDRW DL, WLAN, Bluetooth, Vista Home Premium - it's £400 though, all but a few pennies. Worth a look at if the budget is raised any. Dell Studio 1537 (Plum Purple) Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 2.0GHz 2048mb/160gb/15.4" Wide XGA TrueLife White-LED Screen/DVD-RW Drive/256mb ATi Radeon HD 3450/Wireless Network/Windows Vista Home £379.50 Dell Vostro 1310 Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 1.8GHz 1024mb/160gb/13.3" Wide XGA TrueLife Screen/DVD-RW Drive/Wireless Network/No Operating System £320.85
I would suggest you purchase a netbook, the ones that come pre-loaded with linux. If he plans to use it for creating documents and other general office tasks I would think these are suitable for what he needs. Also given that they don't have windows installed they are cheaper, with the extra money going on hardware.
http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet These are normally refurbished or end of line stock, and often stock goes as soon as it arrives, but you can often find some excellent deals Happy hunting
