ahh, "warming". I love that word. in other words: make the audio sound even more **** by being terrible at reproducing high frequencies.

when it comes down to it, you use a good source, an accurate amp, and speakers with a flat frequency response curve. "warming" is something you definitely _don't_ want.

I buy CDs.. better to have it in more or less the maximum quality I can possibly get (I don't have a USB turntable).. And then I can convert it to whatever formats I want and compress it as I wish, instead of starting with a lossy, pre-transcoded file which is just going to get worse and worse the more you change it.

No, it removes "bad" frequencies, and "good source" isn't always available. Isn't "warming" the reason audiophiles love vinyl so damn much? For that natural analog sound? Clearly musical perfection is in the eye, or ear, of the beholder. Just as musical taste is an opinion, how someone wants to hear it is also an opinion.

AFAIK the reason some audiophiles like vinyl is because vinyl records are prety much equivalent to the master recordings. i never really go in for them because they take up too much space, are susceptible to damage and are just plain impractical in a digital world. it has nothing to do with a 'warm' sound - just a more accurate one. the audiophiles who bang on about how warm it all is are generally the kind of idiots who will spend a thousand pounds on a wooden volume knob. to apply the same reasoning to low bit-rate mp3s (for shame! for shaaaame! they must be purged from your hard drive with the fire of a thousand reformats) is, well, petarded. picture time!

also: no such thing as a "bad frequency". just "bad science" and "good marketing". what that amp is doing is the audible equivalent of applying a soft focus filter to everything. sure, its all flattering for those glamour portraits you see in shopping centers, but would YOU want see like that all the time?

There are unpleasant frequencies. High frequencies, screeches, etc that the ears just plain don't like.

You can't really compare seeing out of focus to music. I notice no loss in quality or musical detail, just a all around equalization and removal of select, out of range anomalies that I don't want in my music anyway.

This discussion passed the pointless zone ages ago. You stick you your gear and listening practices and I will stick to mine, and life continues.

download.com has free music, as well as newgrounds. That is if you are looking for mostly undiscovered stuff, but there are a few actual artists as well.

In the UK we have 2nd best to USA.

    In USA I'd go with Amazon.com with High Quality MP3's (256 & 320kbps).

In the UK www.7digital.com, www.play.com seem best options to me.

Can't wait for Amazon UK to offer the same music download service as Amazon USA - but I can't find any dates as to when they might do that . . . it's been hinted at for most of this year now.

Does anyone know when Amazon UK will do the DRM free HQ downloads ???

I'm with bindi, my HDD got buggered and my ex has lost my ipod since we split so I've lost a considerable amount of music. Especially because of apples stupid DRM. So I'm buying CD's only from now on.

    This.

I use Amazon mp3 for singular tracks where I'm not interested in the rest of the disk or when I just want to try something new. If I like the music, then I'll get the CD. Only very rarely will I just buy a CD straight off the shelf.

for a free streaming service, spotify's quality is really nothing to complain about. Quite the opposite in fact - 160k VBR ogg sounds about equivalent to 192kbit VBR MP3. Their paid service uses 320k streams, which are damn near good enough for even crazy snobs like dom (although not quite).

But yes, you don't own it. Still, awesome free service.

    Zune Pass for $15/month

Unlimited downloads, plus there's software that fixes things with the song files and rights. :worried:

Though honestly, the thought of canceling my service hasn't crossed my mind because it works well for me and is a fraction of the price I pay for my cell phone bill. Can run the software on 3 computers, 2 Zune devices and stream it to a media extender/xbox 360.

Yeah, I'm one of the them.

It's good to offer alternatives, though - given that the original poster didn't really state much in terms of requirements.

Meh, I don't have a set of studio quality speakers so the source really isn't going to matter.

My cheap sony buds and my z5500 set is good enough for me. ;)
