Hey guys, I need to get an ITX board (Pico, Nano or Mini, I dont care which) to run Windows on. Reason why I need it is because I went and put Hack'd all the computers in the house, but I forgot about one thing: the Printer. Its a circa-2004 Dell 922 AIO, which is only supported fully in Windows. So Im looking at a low-cost ITX board that I can run Windows on (more than likely XP thats been nLited or Win 2000) and VNC/SSH in to to take care of print and scan/copy jobs. Any suggestions? The minimum I need is USB, Ethernet, and VGA, so Pico sounds perfect, but I can get a Mini-ITX jetway for like 60 shipped on newegg. So anyone have suggestions? And do I go IDE/Sata based HD or opt for CF?

    What's Hack'd?

If you just need a cheap, small computer to run a printer, pick up an Eee PC 2G or 4G Surf used, or any of the other first generation netbooks. It'll be cheaper and more compact than any normal PC that you can build, even if it is mini-itx. The Eee PC 4G has VGA, ethernet and three USBs, it also has WiFi.. Check your local Craigslist or even Ebay. Local stores may even have good deals on old netbooks, who knows.

If you're set on building a small mini-itx box, any Atom based setup will work, though I will warn against using a CF or SD card as the OS drive. They don't last too long, buying a small 2.5" HDD and an adapter will be a better idea.

an Eee 701 will probably do it, they're going for pretty much nothing on Ebay at the moment (probably on Amazon too)

Netgear's website doesn't say anything specifically about the Dell 922 working with that thing, but if it works that would be the most affordable solution for sure. +1 Fod

OSX86. Google it, cant discuss much due to forum rules :p

Meh, that would do the trick, but the less system resources used the better, I need to be able to access the scanner function and that uses a bot of the cpu. GMA950 should hold up with it though, Ill look into it.

Wont work. Would work perfectly with my older HP Printer, but I have to be able to access the scanner/copier function, which is only able to be accessed via USB 2.0 in Windows.

Good suggestion, ill look at that for an older printer ;)

Basically something like the eee that bigsharn suggested or something that can be ssh/VNC'd into and be able to use the GUI without glitching will work. Ill defenitly take a look at the eee solution though, it looks like a really good idea.

Er, there's nothing illegal in principle about installing OSX on a PC, and there's nothing in the forum rules against discussing it. Unless you just implicated yourself in the illegal acquisition of copyrighted software? Well then, that's illegal.

well, thats where I take the 5th ;)

But yeah, since Dell is a bunch of communist bast**s or /b/tards (however you want to look at it), the printer is only supported on Windows, linux wont even print text to it, and the scanning software is windows-only, so plan is to get something running Windows, and any scan/copy/print jobs can be controlled thru that computer, and since when copies/scans are done, it saves an image in the "My Pictures" directory, I'm thinking of writing something that will transfer anything scanned to the server in the other room. So so far, it looks like I might be getting that eee, unless anyone has any better ideas?
