why nvidia ? id say best card bang per buck at the min is a ATI 1GB 4890. although if i had to have nvidia maybe a 275 MAX. to be fair whats your resolution ?
If you can find one then the GTX275 would be the best sub 200 Nvidia but everywhere seems to be out of stock. Fo close performance you cound get a GTX260 for about 130. Personally if you arent in a hurry then wait for the 300 series to appear. Then you can either pick up one of those or get a 200series cheap
hmm when are the 300 series coming out then? basically building a gaming rig for my brother, spent 600 on everything else and now just got a GPU to pick. Was hoping to get it for less than £200, but the cheaper the better. the monitor is 23 inches, so it'll be 2xxx by whatever it is! my brotehr has a preference for nVidia but it won't take much to persuade him to go ati if it's a good offer!
It is expected to be released towards the end of the year, or Q1 of 2010. That is, if there is no delays.
not only that, apparently nvidia are slowing/stopping production of gtx 2xx series gpu's so the prices aren't likely to drop much if at all, and if he decides to go fermi when it does release, he shouldn't take too much of a hit when he re-sales it
The HD4870 1gb is pretty much the same as the 260. One is better in some games the better in others but pretty much just trade blows. Unless hes looking at a 2 card settup then I donno. Havent seen benchies for SLI/Crossfire in a few months now but when I last checked the 260 was held in high reguard. November PC building guide should be out soon. Itll give you a fair idea for price vs performance.
GTX 275 will do ya, but I don't understand why it must be NVIDIA, the 1GB 4890 would be a better choice either way...
deffo the 4890, you can get the 2gb 4890 vapor x for under £200, well worth the money, and its quiet take care take a look http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=1069443&source=froogle
Sorry ThunderBob didn't write that down right. I am agreeing with you.. Ati is a waste for folding.. That's why i never jump on the 5870 bandwagon & waited for the new 300's..... and waited
i don't know that i would say silly. as was mentioned above, if he folds, definitely no reason to go ati anything. but i was surprised to see that you can get a 4890 vapor-x here in the states for $175 after $20 MIR. cheapest gtx 260 (216) was $150 after $15 MIR and i wouldnt touch that manufacturer. yeah, i personally would pay the $30 ($25 after MIR) to go with the 4890.
it's been confirmed that the 300 series will not be out until Q1 2010, which would be around april. Also a rumor of it pushed back to early Q2 but I'd eat my hat if there was a shred of truth behind that because it's been said that there going to be a CES paper launch.
