Hey, Ive just bought quake 4 and am pi**ed off by how slow its running. My comp beats the minspec but its just runs really slow.

    My spec is as follows:
    Athlon XP 3200+ Socket A 400FSB 2.2Ghz
1 Gig Kingston ram (2x512 duel channel)
Nvidia Geforce FX 5600XT (256 Ram)
    Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2
    120gig Sata HD

I was wondering now there is all this new PCIe gfx cards if i could pick up a much better gfx card. One of the best that was made for AGP before they went PCIe

Or do you recommend improving my ram?

    Thanks

Video card wise a 6800le / 6800gt should give you a good performance boast over your 5600.

Buy a 6800/X800, then come back if you are still struggling... though I strongly suspect you won't need to....

x800xt really, most can reach x850xtpe performance cheaper than the real deal and stil keeps costs down.
x850xtpe=the fastest AGP card out there.

An X800GT would be a good buy.

Alternatively... there's a X800GT AIW VIVO if you'd make use of it's extra features ;)

Currently i have been able to get quake 4 qorkin to an acceptable level by upping my agp apature, decreasing my ram timings, defragging my HD (67.7% to 2.4%), turning off shadows, using medium detail and setting resolution to 1024x768. Im getting about 25 frames about 90% of the time but this is really something i need to look into upgrading some time soon

    Cheers Guys

the fastest nvidia card available for agp is the 6800ultra folowed by the 6800gt then the 6800gs.

The fastest agp ati card is the x850 xt PE these are prety hard to find as they were only made in low quantities.

The top end ATI card is quite abit faster than the 6800ultra but not enough to make up for the lower quality of the ATI drivers and the cooler on the ati card allows it to get uncomfortably hot.

may i mention that a XFX 6800 GT AGP can easly be as fast as a ultra requires less power to run compared to a ultra and wont run as hot! first what resisloution are you running because you may be able to get away with just a 6600 GT card. saving money!

As ATi cards there great but showing there age now, they dont support Diect x 9.0c fully, however a X800 pro is proable your other best bet.

oh and your processor will be to blame aswell i would go for:

    AMD 64 3000 or 3200 £90~100
an agp or PCI-E board cheap?
6600GT or x800 pro AGP or PCI
(low end PCI-e cards are cheaper than AGP even with the same core!)

my rig wud strungle to play quake 4 and iv got a 6800GT and a 2500 XP-M @2.5GHz!

Whats your budget? If money isnt a problem then the X850XT PE should be the one to get. I personally never had a problem with ATI drivers I think theyre teaching Nvidia a thing or two on that front recently. (except for there cock up with the fear optimisations)
