any opinions on registry software? preferably free but will consider low-cost options.

my bios somehow reset and my ram voltages were too low. been crashing for a week. found a program on majorgeeks called little registry cleaner. found 70+ errors and fixed all but 4. those 4 are something to do with activex.

For a freebie you can't beat ccleaner, that'll remove blighters. And do loads of other good stuff too. That's not a typo it is CCleaner

Others beat me to it but another vote for CCleaner as you can have an executable only version on a USB stick with no registry entries required, you simply need admin rights on the relevant machine. Very handy as part of the DR/Tweaking kit.

So far I've used it on every version of XP (including Embeded), Vista and 7 with no problems. UAC doesn't like it, obviously, but the usual "Run as Admin" gets around that.

I think CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - it's the best software. I use it, because they release very often new features.

+1 for CCleaner. It gets rid of the majority of obsolete, redundant leftover entries.

I used to use a lot more registry cleaning software with older Windows, still have RegEditX sitting around though, it adds a nice address bar for registry editing.

Just to add that I'm another CCleaner user. Great for clearing out temp files and rubbish, and great for clearing redundant registry entries. Never caused a problem here... and it's free.

You could just open regedit.exe and arbitrarily delete keys and/or branches... :p

    That, or use CCleaner. :)

Never used a registry cleaner, I get sooooo many calls at work from people who've used em and it's porked windows up something cronic. I'll always go in and manually remove any troublesome keys after backing up the registry first.

IMO, Windows Key + R > Regedit > End-User who knows what they're doing = Better than any registry tweaker and cleaner out there.

yep steve that's true.. that yamicsoft is the only one I've seen on vista that didn't cause me problems.. maybe ccleaner has gotten better but last time I tried it- it took out some keys that adobe needed to run

LOL... Great if you know what you're doing, but.....

However many calls you get from ruined systems caused by crap reg cleaners now.. imagine what will happen if the same people try to do it manually?

I'm sorry, but a GOOD reg cleaner will not ruin anything. I've used CCleaner for ages.. and I run it once a week. No problems.

It's all about NOT using any old software that happens to come in a Google search without knowing what it does.

IMO.. if a reg cleaner works.. why would I bother manually tracking down, and deleting keys? I have better uses for my time.
