    Evening all,

So i thought id buy my next pc within the next couple of days and i was going for a SFF power house, however a friend of mine has informed me that the i7 2600k (unlocked) that i was planning on powering my system would seriously bottleneck the 6990.

Sadly i have been out of the loop the past year and i was wondering first of, is this true, and secondly, if so, which 1155 CPU would be best for the 6990?

The board i was hoping to base the system around is a Zotac Z68 Mini-ITX with a Corsair Force GT 120Gb for the System Drive.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps, youre awesome :)

    Your friend is a troll.

Any of the i5s would easily be able to power it, let alone an i7.

There isn't really anything commercially available that is faster than a 2600k, especially when overclocked.

Sometimes a 6+ core Nehelam i7 would beat it in terms of overall processing power but that is just because it has more processors to do so with, which will not help with graphics cards.

Just a quick question. Why a mini itx mobo with a HD6990? Seem a weird combo. If you want raw performance surely a standard atx mobo will allow better overclocking due to be power circuitry?

Your friend is talking ****. An i5 2500k would be my choice, unless doing lots of multithreaded stuff.

Do mini itx cases with full size psus even exist (a must for a 6990)?
Both the 2500k and 2600k are the fastest single threaded processors on the planet, so you cant go wrong.

Lian Li do one, not sure it would take the 6990 though...Bottom HD cage is removeable but still...

But yes, your friend is a troll. i5 2500k will do perfectly.

Im build a mini itx system in a lian li case and it does take a full size psu. My earlier comment was regarding the size of the graphics card which isnt really a designed to be used in a small space. The heat off that thing would be terrible in such a small case.

i'd be interested to see if a 6990 bottlenecks an i3-2100...

Hi guys, cheers for the response, theyve been great. Apologies for late reply, i currently have no internet at home *RAGE*

I did think my friend was either trolling or just plain wrong. But then he is a AMD hectacore fan.

Wasnt sure about going for the 2500k or the 2600k, but ive budgetted for the 2600k either way.

Playboy: There are a couple that are out that should be able to support the card. I already have the Lian Li Q-08 which is housing my current system, but that will be used after this purchase to house my home server.

MrGumby: You would be right, an ATX system generally has better overclocking than smaller boards, especially for ITX.

Im going for a Mini-ITX as i bought one 2 systems ago and never gone back. Im not a massive fan of massive chunky cases, most of which are a waste of space. Since then ive firmly been in the SFF camp. Im wanting small case but powerful system. Planning on getting the sugo07 as the base system but some slight dremelling may be required.

Whoever you friend is, he doesn't know a thing about CPUs or GPUs by the sound of it. A 6990 will not be bottlenecked by a 2600k. Nor a 2500k, or a 980X or a 970, or a 950 or a 930, or a 920...... etc. Just OC any of the above and bottlenecking won't be a problem.

To be fair, any of the above CPUs at STOCK speed wouldn't bottleneck a GPU. Those CPUs probably wouldn't hit %75 load on a modern game.

You could probably get more FPS if you overclocked them but it wouldn't necessarily be bottlenecking if you didn't.
