My rig: Asus P5K Delux wifi-Ap 6650 @ stock 2.4 GHz 8800GTS pre-overclocked 320 model 4 gb ram 500 F1 Samsung HDD I'm thinking of upgrading cpu and maybe GPU and keeping the rest until Intel's next gen. CPUs come as they will need new socket/mother board. My question is what is the best quad core 775 soc. CPU and how far can it be stable (folding stable) over-clocked using my Freezer Pro 7 cooler?
I was facing the same thing.. In the end I overclocked my E6600 (C2D 65nm) from 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz with a Freezer 7 Pro then bought a cheap Vapour-X 4870 1GB to replace my 8800GTS 320mb (same as yours). Admittedly the GPU purchase was more driven by the fact that the fan sensor on my 8800 died which meant it was always runing at 100% (too loud) but the 4870 only cost me £120. For the same price you can now get the ATI 5770 cards, lower heat, noise and power consumption although they have less memory bandwidth than the 4870. Are you willing to try an overclock of your existing CPU? I think the E6650 is a 1333 FSB running @ 2.33GHz. Assuming you don't want to spend much money, the P5K should o/c the E6650 well. Does anyone here have experience on what kind of o/c a 6650 can get on a P5K?
can I keep the 8800 GTS folding and use a 5770 ? I have been looking for Q6600 but can not find any stock anywhere where it's stated as GO stepping/SLACR
One other point I would defiantly want to keep the overall cost down 200 to max 300 pounds. Yes Folding is important and I want to keep doing it. 470s are too expensive for my tastes.
iirc no - if you're after a good OC chip, try the E8400 - its only dual core, but mine goes to 4GHZ easily.... infact.. i should probably try to push it further some time soon. (i run it at 4ghz 24/7)
If you are buying new or from a store, they should be the newer G0 stepping by now. You would be better off with a Q6600 for OC, goes for around 90 quid on ebay.
I don't suppose any one has a Q6600 laying around in a draw some where they don't need? (worth a shot)
Well if you aren't in a rush, I plan on selling mine when I take apart my pc for upgrades/water. I still have quite the shopping list though, so not gonna be good for you if you want it soon.
yeah I'm not in a rush, just want to do a cheap upgrade to hold me through the first 3-6 months of the new CPU launch so im not tempted to do something stupid and buy before the first price drop.
