Hi, i currently have a Netgear DG384GT, its about 4 years old, and im pretty sure its slowly dying. The Wireless signal has been terrible for about a year, and it gets scalding hot after a few minutes usage.

I Have been using it to supply Internet to an Apple Time Capsule for the last 10 months or so, and this has worked very well, Range is superb etc, and it handles multiple connections alot better. But now im thinking the Speed of my network is being limited by the DG384GT, and im looking for an upgrade.

Im a heavy Gamer and Downloader, usually torrenting something or other, and i also stream a lot of TV and Music, so the usage is very high. Its never turned off, and will have a few things plugged in by Ethernet, but probably wont be used for Wireless unless it can provide a better speed or coverage than the Time Capsule. Also needs Gigabit Ethernet Ports, no 10/100.

Really Like Netgear's routers, but im willing to look at any brand, and wouldnt mind playing around with a Linux Router to really customize it.

    Cheers for any help.

Have a look at the "new" D-Link DIR-825. The reason I've quoted the word "new" is that it's been out in the States for over a year, but only now has found its way over here.

Another good choice would be the DIR-655 or one of its clones like the TRENDnet TEW-633GR (although it costs about as much as the DIR-655 these days).

A good place to read reviews would be Small Net Builder, by the way.

If you wouldn't need wireless I would have a better suggestion for you.

As "a heavy Gamer and Downloader", a wired setup would benefit you greatly. If that's not possible, it'll be more worth your time to make it possible, or buy a longer cable. :E

IMO wifi is for laptops and cell phones.

    I have this-
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124277

The wireless has been flawless. In about 6 months usage I've had to restart it maybe twice because of, well, it being an inexpensive router.

This device rarely drops packets. I've ran ping command with the "t" switch and out of 500 pings, only 2 dropped. I've done this quite a bit without dropping any. My previous d-link would drop 1 out of 20 packets.

I love the first review on the page, referring to one of the largest Networking companies as Shitsco. Yes. He obviously knows a lot about Networking.

There's currently two devices connecting to it wirelessly, my laptop and my mom's desktop.

It's been a solid little router for me.

    Lmao

I use to like D-Link, but I've managed 10+ D-Link access points, all the same model, all complete crap. My D-Link was better, yes, but not nearly as nice as my current Linksys router. My sister's D-Link also lacks reliability.

It all depends on the model. D-Link has their share of bad routers, so does Linksys.

I've heard nothing but problems with the Linksys model that is around $20 cheaper then mine.

The sub $150 Wireless router market is hit or miss regardless of brand.

Well this might work better if you let us know how much you're willing to spend on a wireless router.

I've been using the D-Link DIR-655 for about a year now, and it's been flawless in every respect. I can't recommend it highly enough.

get a router that is supported by DD-WRT and install the DD-WRT firmware on it, now you can prioritise your traffic, download p2p and game at the same time without any problem.

how good a router is usually dictated by its firmware and its hardware, you can't go wrong with either D-link or Linksys, but nothing beats the DD-WRT firmware

edit: thanks capnPedro, was wondering why my google searches are not turning up its Wiki site
