From [H]ardOCP, well worth a read.

    http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/10/03/battlefield_3_open_beta_performance_image_quality/1

I think the take away message can be summerised as ...inconsistant.

What have other people found? personally I'm finding it all a bit underwhelming which is almost certainly down to my card's age and driver. But seeing as my card delivers on everything else I throw at it I'm left wondering if I caan justify an upgrade for just this game.... now or wait til AMD/nVidia refresh their range over the coming months.

its a ****ing beta, why are you making expensive decisions based on incomplete code on both dice and nvidia/ati parts?

    wait until final before thinking.

    /me slaps the silly human.

this article uses different resolutions for each graphics card! how is that in any way helpful?

they should do each card at each res

It didn't 580/6970 at highest res. 570/6950 and 6870 at 1920x1200 ...that's the res you'd expect each of those cards to be most likely used at.

Latest post on the battlefield blog clearly states that the beta code we are playing now is months old. The purpose of the beta is to stress test the back end and battlelog. Wait for the full release before making any kind of "GPU for BF3" purchases.

Well I interpret what he's saying as that the 570 and below struggled to play the game with either the quality of detail or acceptable fps at the higher res that one would find acceptable.

Would you expect to be play the game on ultra with everything turned up, at 2560x1600 ....on a 6870?

    A tad ambitious, perhaps.

This, the very nature of the word "beta" in this sense means unfinished.

Surely they will still be doing optimisation and all sorts right now, so these could all potentially go out of the window with the final product?

plus, there's no Ultra setting in-game. it's just High. there's no Ultra-level texture or optimization. saw that in a twitter from the dev somewhere.

i was really really going to grab a 560ti since i'm playing at 1680x1050, and its $250CAD all tax included, which is great.
considering Keppler goin to come out with 600 series first before 700, its going to be months (if not a year) before nvidia's next desktop-performance card.

    BUT

it's a BETA. a month-old beta. and my oc'd 8800GTS 640MB can play Crysis 2 on High, and Witcher 2 on high-medium settings. Do I really want to get rid of it? it plays the BETA on mostly low, some medium settings, and it averages around 30-40. barely unplayable, but its aight. it only lags if i snipe in the tunnel when it smokes and burns through the scope. then it drops <25. out in the park it can go 40+. and even at mostly low settings, it's still very pretty :)

so i'm waiting for the retail as well. then maybe grab the 560ti if necessary on xmas or somethin.

    just my 2c.

I struggle to see how your 8800GTS can play this at 30-40 fps!!

In terms of changing the gfx card, how about the 2GB ASUS Direct CU II 6950?

I whacked mine up to ultra on 1920x1200 and whilst it's not at 9000fps it's still plenty quick enough with no slowdown at all.

6950 would have no problem whatsoever.

as for my 8800GTS, remember, its not a GT, it's a GTS. and it has 640MB memory. plenty for 1680x1050 on my 22" monitor.

i clock it at 625/910 memory. i can push it to 640/925 but id rather not fry my card.

around the park (stage1) i get an average of 35-40FPS on mostly low settings.
stage2 i get 25-35 since it has lotsa smokes n fires. if i bring a sniper rifle and ZOOMED IN, it'll drop it under 25. sometimes <20. ugh. so UMP or shottie is my best friend there.
stage3 in the station isn't so bad. but still pretty bad for zoomed sniper rifle. but maybe around 30-35.
stage4 is back outside so it can poke through 40 every now n then.

rest of spec in my sig.

remember, vr-zone tested this BETA with intel 3000HD integrated on a lapto. all low, but still play 15-25FPS. unplayable? sure. but still runs.

    Im playing using -
GPU Type : NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
GPU Clocks : Core 650 MHz / RAM 900 MHz

i dont know my FPS count but its more than enough, on low im getting very good gameplay, it seems to work ok on Med with occasional issue.

however cannot run at native res.

How is your card running this? I thought that dx11 was a minimum.

I'm pretty happy with my fps as well. 60fps 90% of the time at medium settings and it still looks great. I want the card to last me for another year at least, so I'm happy I don't have to upgrade if I bought this.

I'm on a 8800GTX and can vouch for other 8800 users saying it plays fine.
obviusly it'll be even smoother when retail is out.
