    Hey folks,

I finally got around to putting together a new system, and my video card of choice (for price reasons) was the BFG 7950 GT OC 512Mb. Unfortunately I've got a problem with it. It produces a very high pitch and loud sound. I know it's the video card from having listened to the system very closely all over while on and finding the sound came from the video card. I don't overclock my system or video card, and the videocard is as it came except for some ram sinks added to 6 of 8 of the memory chips (due to the stock cooler covering 2 of the ram chips partially). The video card also runs at 127 F (~51 C) idle.

Has anyone had any problems like this with their card? Does anyone have an suggestions for why it may be making the sound? Any ideas over whether it is permanent or not? Also, does anyone know the normal operating temperatures for this card, and know if 127 F is normal?

Also, on a partially unrelated note, does anyone know if the Accellero X1 will work on the 7950 GTOC? No documentation I've found says it will, and explicitly doesn't list it as a compatible card, but the documentation and the website haven't been updated since before the 7950 GTOC existed. The 7950 GT has the same mounting holes as some of the other compatible cards, and they appear to be in the same place, but who knows.

FYI, for anyone interested in my core system for reference in solving this, I'm using an AMD X2 5200+, Asus Crosshair motherboard, and 2 gigs Corsair RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Brian

I get this a little bit, and a guy I know gets it a lot. My graphics card is a 6800GS, his is a 7600GT(IIRC).

My advice to you would be return it as faulty. Chances are it's faulty caps or electronics and that just ain't gonna improve no matter what you do to it. Nvidia must be using some really low quality stuff in some of their cards, and frankly it's making me think that this will be both my first and last Nvidia card, at least for a few more years.

Well, I called BFG, and the guy there didn't seem to know what the problem was. I did a few things he suggested like updating my BIOS, of course with no effect. I guess I'll call them again and see if they take a look at it.

I tend I agree, that it probably is a bad capacitor. It definitely sounds like something generated by the electronics, not something mechanical as would be generated by the fan.

I'm still interested if anyone knows if the Accelero X1 by Arctic Cooling will work on the 7950 GTOC.

    Thanks,
    Brian
