He basically took a list from the Federalist Society. For all the shouting you'd have probably got the same three or thereabouts from another Republican President. Generally the less interested he was in something the better.
The point isn't who he appointed, it's that whoever he appointed he now expects favours. Won't get them, but that is how his brain works.
At this point, it's fair to say the legal proceedings are little more than a diversion for the media while he installs loyal stooges in sensitive roles to root out and destroy evidence of the shady **** he's been up to over the last four years.
