    With no apparent consequence.

Because the senate voted for there to be none, or at least not enough of them voted for there to be consequences. The House does the impeachment, the Senate is responsible for the 'consequences' [or lack thereof].

I know - that was my initial point - voting to convict is entirely different to the vote to impeach. Which is why I said that I hope the GOP senators have the spine to see it through this time.

The house votes to impeach and then the trial is in the Senate as the court. The Senate's vote is the conviction.

So Trump was previously impeached, but not convicted. If we have 20 Republican Senators voting to convict then his is done.

Impeach, drag heels until majority swings into their favour, convict, lock door, throw away key, move on.

Impeach, drag heels until after Inauguration, and tie up the senate with the trial leaving it unable to do any of what Biden wants to get done.

Because kneecapping the senate is what McConnell knows/does best.

Honestly it would be more surprising if that overgrown turd in a suit didnt make life difficult for a democratic president.

Amist all the high principal have a think about the low politics. Casting aside mere matters of law, morality and honesty, who in Washington most gains most from him getting convicted and barred from office and who would really like to see him running a campaign from now to 2024?

Pick your answers from Ted Cruz and Pelosi/Schumer.

    ...? What?

The winners if he loses his post-presidential fiasco pension, travel allowance, and secret service detail are clearly the tax payers.

The winners if he goes to jail for his almost countless illegal actions are the American people.

The losers, should he go free and unpunished (and arguably if he doesn't), are also the American people and the democratic system because that utter toilet of a conman has exposed how to overthrow the government to people smart enough to actually do it if they so choose.

Cruz will suck the turds out of whichever gimp is at the head of the republican party, as is tradition, and Pelosi and Schumer will argue with the same republicans they always have regardless of what happens.

    This is irrelevant, because this:

    is the point.

Trump has consistently spread misinformation and lies about the election results and has fomented hatred and division throughout his entire term, culminating in an armed insurrection where terrorists seized the building central to American democracy.

If Clinton can be impeached for getting a bl0wj0b in the oval office from a woman that wasn't his wife, then Trump can be impeached for his part in fomenting an insurrection. He cannot be allowed to get away with it, even if his term finishes before the Senate votes to convict.

    EDIT: Seriously? 'bl0wj0b' is censored?!

Fwiw, folks I'd like to see him impeached, barred from office and then convicted of any of the many crimes he has committed before and during his time in office. Ideally bankrupted and ridiculed along with his horrible family..

However you have note the ironies of the situation. Cruz will no doubt make an impassioned speech aimed at the Trump supporters and really devoted to his 2024 campaign, but you have to wonder if he is thinking "could I do this in a way to cement my position as the most Trumpety candidate while somehow enraging enough dithering republican senators to make them actually vote to impeach Trump". Given the loathing of him that his colleagues had even before 2016, there might be a way!

Part of me would have liked to see trump's Twitter after getting impeached a second time.

    So much capslock.
