I have no idea what's going wrong here, but it's really annoying me. I just got a new motherboard (Abit KD7) and a new HD (Maxtor 80GB). I decided that I'd start fresh and install only my 80GB HD. So now I'm using only 1 HD, and a CDRW drive, each on separate channels. Now comes my problem, I've installed a fresh install of WinXP, along with drivers for my audigy, 4.45 drivers for the mobo, USB2 drivers, detonator 40s for my GF2MX400, and WinXP SP1. My problem is that now for some reason, my earth and beyond won't load, my MSN won't save my password, a few web sites won't save my login, and cookies won't save properly. What's wrong here? All this started happening when I got my new mobo and HD. I've already tried formatting and re-installing, but thatdidn't help. Help please? Oh, and I'm also using a seperate network card, not the one that's built-in to the mobo.

sounds like a registry problem to me, all that stuff happens to me when my registry goes poop

get a registry scanner. and see what it finds.

Not a problem with your installation/hardware. It is more likely that you forgot to tick a box or two in the advanced IE settings.

could be your settings in ie6 as for sites.

as for msn and maybe other applications... the problem is that you have to reboot each time you put an update even if it doesn't ask you.... I once had similar problems when I was updating xp. it was going weird and didn't saved some settings...

did you rebooted each time you've put an update?

also, installing a bunch of software in a single boot can arm you registry too.... that thing is sooo weak...

well that's what I've expericed. hope that it helps

Could be your cookie privacy level? Default it is set at medium trying changing it to low. You can find it on the privacy tab of internet options in IE.

Well, I've had other people in the Abit forum tell me that my 300W power supply just doesn't cut it for a KD7, so that sounds very probable. What Tribal Dragon said sounds about right though, I pretty much installed all my drivers without restarting once, so that could very well be it. I'm starting to feel very stupid, but the most complicated problems are usually just a simple solution.

I use my KD7-Raid with no problems what so ever on a cheap Macron 300W PSU. Unless you have an excess of PCI cards and external peripherals then 300W should be fine. And there is no way that an underpowered PSU would cause IE not to say your password and the other problems you described.

Well, even more problems now, I tried to re-install windows, but now, every time that I finish installing everything, and it restarts (for the 2nd time), it asks me if I can see the resolution, and once I click OK, it just freezes, right there. Nothing happens, it just says that it's loading windows. I tried leaving it alone for the night to see if it was just temporarily frozen and it didn't work. I've tried formatting (full and quick) and installing windows a total of 4 times now, and it's always frozen at the same spot. :wallbash: I'm starting to think that it is my power supply, fortunately I do have another power supply I can jury rig to work in parallel, but I'd rather not have to do that. Any suggestions of what could be the matter? I did buy my CPU retail, so if that's the problem, then it wouldn't be that bad... However I would rather get my computer working asap, I'm tired of using my G4 400. Help me please! :sigh:

EDIT: I just tried the power supply usage guide from this forum and noticed that I'm using 274W without counting a few of my other fans and assuming that my CDRW/DVD combo drive uses the same wattage as a regular 12x CDRW drive. I think that I may be a little low on power either way. Not to mention that the KD7 has a special power plug for 2x 12V lines which is supposed to boost the 5V line for the mobo, I'm thinking that I'm really pushing my PSU.

my bro had the same problem but his was stopping while installing xp between the 2 reboots...

and the problem was his PIII overheating and freezing due to an incredible amount of dust on the cpu heatsink and in the powersupply.

but that can't really apply on AMDs...

it's sure that if you get over the limit of your psu, your comp will crash... but it depends of your psu... I mean I have a generic 300W and it allow me to drain about 290-295W... I'm border line but everything runs and never had any probs... yet;)

try to plug only the essential and see if it still freeze

I opened up my case to unplug all the non-essential thins (high wattage fans, etc...) and then it started up, and then just shut down. Now it doesn't even start up, the power button does nothing. I'm quite concerned now, this isn't good. I don't know what could be wrong now, but I'm quite close to giving up, screaming, tossing my computer in the corner, and using my G4 for a few months and ignoring anything in the windows world.

try clearing the CMOS and check all major power connectors are securely in place.

What I mean is that I plugged everything in, then pressed the power button, it turned on, then just stopped after maybe 2 seconds. Now it just doesn't turn on at all, I press the power button and nothing happens, the power supply doesn't even turn on. I haven't tried clearing the cmos yet, but I'll do that now.

Well, just tried clearing the CMOS, and that managed to get it to power on for 2 seconds again (cpu and northbridge fans turned on) but after that it turned itself off, and I'm back to it not turning on, or doing anything when I press the power button.

I recently got a KD7 too, and running it on a 300W. I don't have the problems you described. But i do know that the KD7 runs a lot hotter than other motherboards, like Tribal Dragon said it's a good idea to check your CPU temp in BIOS.

    Ak.

Take EVERYTHING out and everything apart, start from scratch. Just lay your mobo on top of the static bag it came in on a desk. Only put your graphics card in, hard disk and cd rom drive. then plug in the power and try that.

I'll try that tonight, along with swapping parts with my friend who's got a very similar computer (just different motherboard). I'll see what's broken, and if possible, replace it (better not be my RAM!).

Alright, well I've tried swapping parts with my friend, and it's down to either the motherboard or the power supply. My guess would be that the power supply is bad, because this would be the 2nd motherboard that's been broken. I'm not sure if it's really the power supply, or just a bad luck streak. I don't want to risk any further equipment, so I'm not going to try either of those parts with my friend's hardware. Any advice of whatI should do? I can get my motherboard RMA'd, so that isn't too bad, but my power supply would be very bad...

take the psu of your friend and try your mobo and coponents with it... if it works, then it's your mobo... else it's your mobo.

if it's the mobo, your friend's psu won't be damaged.

or if you still fear damaging your friend's psu... then go to your local hardware store and make them tested... you'll see what's the problem;)

That's a good idea, I'm not particularily fond of a few of the local hardware stores around here. Well, I'd better test it soon, so that my 30-day warranty doesn't run out. Thnx for the help!
