The Iranian earthquake was a year ago exactly on boxing day. The death toll in that wsa caused by baddly build mud buildings collapsing. This is a much worce situation, with the water will come lots of disease and flooding eliminates the posibility of saving trapped people as they have probably drowned. I hope your mum's friend is ok.
Whilst it's a terrible tragedy, it's like any product named Hurricane, Tornado, Lightning, Meteor, Asteroid, Earthquake, Yada Yada. It'a generic term and there is no reason to change the name due to one occuring.. it's not like it's called the Thermaltake Paddington Rail Crash or the Thermaltake Twin Towers.
Tonight at 8pm ITV1 there is a special program about how the tradegy evolved, should be interesting to watch. (Thats for the UK only!)
Hi I've just been watching about this on Television and the program says that over a thosand feet of the sea bed had dropped in depth dramatically. if thats the case does that not mean that the effects for this tragedy are going to be more far reaching then anyone here has mentioned. I may be wrong but will not a drop of that size effect the sea currents in that part of the world which in turn will effect the fishing areas etc. I don't know that much about that side of things so if any one could say yes it would or no it would'nt, I would be interested

Did this not supprise anyone considering most of bangladesh floods easily?? That's just unlucky considering how far away it is.
Just found out that one of my friends is down there, luckily she made it. She had been down on the beach in Kaho Lak, Thailand, when the tsunami came. She didn't have a chance and the water tossed her around and in to stuff. She just got out of surgery now, apperantly it was rather bad, but the doctors said she would make it..
Jake: That is if she´s not infected, the swedish UD has not done anything to help them down there. REUTERS News says that 56 swede´s are dead, still swedish UD has only confirmed 6 dead. I know that Reuters has right this time. Swedish UD : Outland Department in Sweden.
ITV just quoted 100,000 dead its the end of the world as we know it... even the tv newscasters are saying as much
I got these photos in my mail today from a friend in Sri Lanka. He says people were crowding the front to see the wave coming in, thinking they were safe behind the seawall, with no idea how big it really was. Many didn't get away.
Why? Yes, scientists are saying that this COULD increase the Earth's rotation by 3 microseconds and tilt on it's axis by 1 inch, but eventhough this is a disater of biblical proportions, it's very doubtfull that this will have any long-term consiquences let alone change the world as we know it. As far as I'm concerned, those newscasters are trying to get headlines and viewers by sensationalizing this disaster.
Thunder return, yes, the goverment is indeed slow, they should have sent help asap but it took them about 3 days to realise how bad it really was :/ Some movies: http://www.halflife.nu/jake/tsunamiphuket.wmv http://www.halflife.nu/jake/patong_beach.wmv http://www.halflife.nu/jake/kaolak.ram
one sign of many; I meant to imply that there will be more to come. Edit: the newscaster I was speaking of mentioned it about three times then shut up, presumably by 'those in charge'. As many news stations, they had to report the same event every now and again (even though it must get very monotonous for the newscasters) he suddenly stopped his 'speculation'
Ah, okay.. Gotcha Out of curiosity, why do you think that there are more to come? Good. It drives me insane when newscasters report speculation and sensationalism as news.
There's always more to come though. Considering arent there a few BIG volcanos and faults that are overdue? Yellowstone park?? Or somewhere in the US there's one. Tbh, it's the life we all lead though - we could be killed crossing the road tomorrow. We all escape death on a daily basis.
I hate to bring religion into it, but most religions teach of an armageddon or an end of the world. Even those who's religion is science believe in a singularity event when the world is changed forever from what we know of today. not to mention the hundreds of calamities which we have overdue - volcanoes, asteroids, viruses, genetic deseases, nuclear arsenals etc. I give us till around 2050 (as per the aztec calendar) anything past that is "bonus time". What I dont understand is that we can prevent everything thus far and further but we dont even try.
