somehow my default program for opening up .bin files got changed to excel. and now excel is trying to open them and obviously that is not going to work, so how can i change it back so that these applications will open correctly? thanks

    Right click on the file

    Go to Open With

    Select Choose Program

Find the right program you want

Be sure to check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

I dont have excel installed right now, but what you might want to do is open up excel and go into the options. Find where it lists the associated files and uncheck .bin.

no thats not the thing. i know that .bin should be an executable file, but i cant execute it because for some reason excel tries to open it.

all the programs i try to download from websites online (yahoo messenger, aim) are attempting to be opened by excel, and not docking the program so i can install it. what do i do?

Are you sure there .bin files and not .exe files? If there install executiables that you downloaded (yahoo, aim) there .exe and not .bin.

Your going to have to go through the excel options and try to find an option to change what files excel associates itself too. Or you could uninstall excel, then reinstall it after you've installed yahoo messenger and aim.

    highlight a bin file...

    press "command(apple key) + i"

You see a check next to "open with:"

click on it to expand it...

    and then select the app...

if it's a OS X .bin file.. then usually it's compressed and can be opened with stuffit.

P.S. @ DivineSin... he's posted on the apple forums.. so i'm guessing he wants to know apple realted answers... you've been describing steps to fix it for a windows machine lol!!
