Hey Ive got one of theose new (inexpensive) microsoft biometric scanners.
    Linky:
    http://www.eyenetwatch.com/biosecurity/microsoft-usb-fingerprint-reader.htm

The question is, they have 4 red internal smt leds. normally, i'm pretty gung-ho about it, but would chaning these LEDs affect the scanner? i have some blue SMT LEDs on hand. I just don't know how the scanner works, and don't want to void my warranty on a wild goose chase.

Yer I've never seen one that needs light to work.

The ones on the limited access labs at work are just a box with a gold area that reads the print. No lights used for tha scanning, just one that goes green when the door is unlocked...

You sure the lights on it arent for decoration, kinda like the one at the top-rear of the MS intelli-mice?

The lights-as-decoration thing wouldn't suprise me. It could be an optical fingerprint scanner though.

in any case, i'm gping to try the swap - i'll post results later.

if you read this before you try the swap

just put some black electritions tape over them, if it works fine, then we know, if it dosen't peel off and no harm done!

I prefer the line swipe ones myself, as its harder for someone to actually see a finger print on them, and its better design idea as you need fewer sensors.
