    Celt, give me a bell when you wanna set up a server off your ADSL... I'd think at 6+ people it'd start to get laggy ... 10 definatly...

    Anyhow - I've done one or two.. you dont *need* to download the standalone HLDS really - unless the comptuer is soley a server etc.

    Half-Life isntalls come with HLDS in them anyhow.

    You just add a line or two to the server.cfg file to get it register'd on the won masterlist, it might even be in there already.

    You can coun't me in aslong as games are either played at:

    4am
    On saturday Morning
    Or were going to a LAN event

    The 4am's there because thats the only time I get decent connections on BT

    Saturday morn, becuase I can highjack my dads ISDN lines at work :D

    Or lannin cause I just love laughing at the people I just mashed

    I have a 10Mbit lan connection and have had 16 tops on my setup with no lag. 18 begins to get a bit fluctuated as my puter starts to die a little (only 1.4gig and 512meg ram)

    Adsl is only good for 12 (have tryed it with previous clan, 14 is just ok, 16+ is nightmare 1000+ pings every 2 secs)

    I can setup Dod or CS, dunno about Q3 - never tryed. havent got UT.

    Edit: i reguarly setup free Dod servers for the public so authorising with Won is not a prob. only 1 problem:
    Trans-atlantic traffic costs me money, so id like to know about US/Canadian and i think Austrailan ppl (goes thru same london-newyork router) if i set one up.

    EDIT2: btw - it wouldnt be perminant cause i use my PC and have to sleep - set times only :) when u want a MASS FFA or somin :D

    EDIT3: I dont want to be in your clan btw - but id love to play with u lot :) havin a good fraggin with ppl u know is far more fun :)

    Last year when I was in halls, I used to run a dedicated server, and play on the same machine, by connecting back thru the network... The pings were great, with 20 ppl playing, the pings used to be at about 50 max...

    This was with a 1Ghz athlon, and 512Mb PC100 RAM out onto a 10MBps Network... I used to get a little lag myself when I played on a full server, but that was more due to my graphics card only being a Voodoo3 2000, so it was asking the processor to help at times of more than 8 ppl in view at once...

    However now, with my TBird 1.4, and 512Mb PC133 RAM, and a geforce 3, I could happily run and play on the same dedicated server with a full 20 players...

    Thus with your system, I cant see it being a problem running a server...

    PS I have had two servers running at one point on my 1gig Athlon box (couldnt play myself tho) I had a TFC server and a CS server (the days when I had 1Gb of PC100!!!) :D

    Just an Idea

    What we do @ GiBTEK is use [GiB] in front of our nick so it's easy to see and find people.

    Why don't you use [BiT] so if your on the pubbies you can eyeball each other.

    I've found this useful and intimidating especially if theres half a dozen of you in the same server.

    Any good?

    i was just thiking [BIT] as our tag, we need to get every1 onto a server and have some trials to see wot kinda standard we all are.

    lets get a date lined up then, sometime that we can all play,
    i think before it gets too further we shoudl make someone clan leader,

    A copy of halflife, with all the latest updates (the latest patch can be found at www.planethalflife.com), plus a copy of CounterStrike 1.3, which can be found at www.counter-strike.net

    Halflife CD is about £20 at most, and the patches are free, all you have to do is download them, the CS1.3 patch is about 100Mb, and the HL 1.1.0.8 patch is about 75Mb...

    Could take a while to download on a slow connection, I suggest if you havent got a good connection to the net, find someone with a cable connection.... :D

    If i ran a dedicated server i could do 24 easy, but i wont cause i wanna frag you lot too :)

    Set a date n time, set someone to setup a server for a couple of hrs (who have we got offered other then me??... ill re-read the thread later, have to go do my lab session in a mo).

    What we playin? CS? Q3? ....Dod...???

    its counterstrike, and if u do setup a server u can play it on the same computer... yu just use a different port ie: run the server on 27016 and connect on the default port, 27015.

    as for having a server on adsl... i have beena dvised that it would only be possible to have about 6 people becuase the upload is only 256k which will begin to have bad pings after about 4-6 people.

    Well, my clan |SOL|, Shadows of Light, we have a clan server that, if you wanted to use for trials, I could book out :)
    Infact, we have two :)

    Me and EvilBob are also making a Quake3 clan (TDM and CTF) so if anyone is interested (Koolvin, Kevo ;)) please let us know!
