https://www.formula1.com/en/video/2017/3/Onboard_comparison__2017_vs_2016_at_Barcelona.html Hamilton's 2016 pole lap vs Raikkonen's faster in testing. Huge huge gap and Raikkonen's lap was a bit scrappy with a fair few missed apices. I really hope the added aero doesn't completely baulk the overtaking, although I think we'll see more overtaking during a corner rather than going into it.
I'm hoping as well that the late breaking required and more physical demands will see drivers tire and more prone to unforced errors.
Whether it's F1 or sports cars or even DTM more aero always means less overtaking. I would quite like to be proven wrong, but I expect these cars to string out immediately at the start and then just stay there until pit stops.
I think drivers like Riccardo, Hamilton, Alonso and Verstappen will go for (and pull off) overtakes, regardless of the aero/mechanical balance.
I think everyone was assuming Merc were sandbagging to an extent... Remains to be seen if that assumption is true.
They did some calculations based on assumed fuel loads. Fastest times would still put Merc 3/10ths up at worst. Enough that might be enough to stop it been a 1/2 every race. Fuel corrected the 1.19.8 lewis did if there calcs are accurate would be 1.17.8 Ferrari run approx 30kg less fuel in testing is a assumption from previous years. Means the best time they would get on softs would be 1.18 ish. Its close if thats accurate. Which is what we want. Bottas is further away its all based on Lewis times. Which was set on a cold track at 4.50 in the day. Unlike Bottas and Vettal Prime time quali hours around the midday mark. Bottas is 3/10ths down on his team m8 on average. Which could put him into those ferraris if things are accurate.
I think Bottas will be trying his best, he has done 70% of Mercs testing in lap numbers. Since he has joined a new team I would expect him to be trying to impress. End of the day Lewis will still be employed as part of Merc as long as he wants to stay, brings in too much for Merc exes to let that one go. Alonso does a similar thing for McLaren. I personally think if it's close Bottas is a downgrade on Nico in a huge way. If Merc have big lead he will be expected to challenge Lewis. If he can't and there ahead we are in for the most one sided championship we have ever saw or had. TBH if Merc are miles clear and Bottas can't compete I would not bother watching myself.
I've resigned myself to Merc running away with the championship tbh, but I'm hoping for some decent racing for the 3-10 positions. If that turns out to be the case then the season should be worth watching even if it is a dominant Merc season.
So, FIndia have updated their paintjob thanks to a sponsorship deal - ...and now I have the Pink Panther theme stuck in my head...
Uh...o....OK... Sure. I mean, we wanted more colour on the grid... right? It'll look pretty exciting to see a red Ferrari overtaking a pink FI while an orange McLaren is getting blue flagged out the way, at least.
Red Ferrari overtaking Pink Findia while they go past a blue-flagged yellow Renault whilst an orange McLaren is broken down in the back of the shot...
So they've got a deal with Pepto Bismol to see if they can finally stop Vijay from spouting all that sh#t? On the plus side, we could have a grid in spectral order, if Mclaren can pull their fingers out and get ahead of Renault. It would be pretty at least.
Red (Ferrari) Yellow (Renault) Pink (Force India) Green (???) Purple (DO EET RBR) Orange (McLaren) Blue (Torro Rosso) We just need Sauber to paint it's cars green, and RBR to go back to the purple scheme, and we're good for a nursery rhyme grid.
