It was always luck that there were no more deaths at that corner.Any mistake throws you against the barriers, which in most cases direct you back into the road, where other drivers arrive blindly over the horizon. I will be surprised if this doesn't end up being either removal of Raidillon (less likely) or making the runoff area after the horizon much, much bigger (which would prevent most crashes, but not all), plus probably removal of the asphalt runoff area (or addition of another surface with bigger grip/slowdown performance).
I saw the article about the crash and shared it... didn't realise the driver had been killed... so... more 'yikes'..
RIP Anthoine Hubert. There was absolutely no way to escape. Looked like lift-off oversteer, the rear end just came lose.
I saw the Hubert news at the end of the C4 coverage -- Steve Jones was barely able to get through the report without breaking down...
just seen a youtube video with footage of the impact, and a good analysis of what happened its a messed up impact... neither driver were really at fault for the impact, they were both taking evasive action and ended up on a collision course i wont share it because, yeah its footage of a guy losing his life
Spoiler: Results Hmmmm. Yellow flag on the last lap just in front on the leaders as Hamilton bears down on leclerc. Crashgate 2? Absolutely devastating for norris to break down exactly one lap from the end.
Spoiler I thought that too with Giovanazzi Thats twice (Third?) in one season a Renault powered car has broken down so close to the end of a race. Great result for Le Clerc. Merc pushed him hard the whole race and the cracks in that Ferrari were beginning to show. Vettel couldnt get what he needed from the car resulting in needing to pit and dare I say, cracked under pressure at the start. Tho a lot of drivers looked rusty. Haas looked good for a bit before returning to nothing more than a mobile chacine. Good rusult for Albon. Based on Quali and practice i wasnt expecting anything from him this race and was wondering if the switch was a mistake. He looked good going round Riccardo
Spoiler: Le spoil de ler Albon looked solid, much more fighty than I can recall seeing Gasley. But yes a lot of them looked rusty. Interesting the sudden rise in engine failures, notably the merc PU with fire from the exhaust.
I suppose we don't need to spoiler here anymore, it being well after the race now. Albon did very well for his debut. That overtake on DannyRic was beautiful. The Ferrari was clearly brutally quick in a straight line (and FP trap times seem to show Merc is nowhere NEAR some of the other teams), but seemed to eat tyres MUCH more than the mercs. The way Lewis could lean on the car towards the end, as opposed to the speed that Charles carried was nothing shy of impressive. Charles' drive was rock solid start to finish. And it was notable how quiet he was on the radio after. That behaviour, provided it stays earnest and doesn't turn into a PR stunt, makes for a good and popular champion.
Monza is going to prove interesting as while not fast merc can lean heavily on its tyres so quali they will suffer while in the race going round say Parabolica they will be able to hold onto their speed far better than Ferrari. But even Toto said the 5kph they have on Ferrari in DRS just isn't enough First few laps Ferrari can scamper off break DRS range and then its only later when the tyres start going away they will have a chance. Charles was great no sign that the pressure got to him an as you said very quiet on the radio just got on with his job. Real shame for both Lando and Kimi, Lando for his engine going into anti stall (same as Carlos Science) and for Kimi having Max go for a non existent gap against the barrier, also how lucky was Lando with the track just emptying in front of him like that.
Yeah I remember on the commentary they were saying he literally cant see any cars in front or behind him. In itself that shows two things, one the Mclaren had a race pace advantage (mainly over the mobile road block HAAS cars which slowed everyone up) and just how much quicker merc and Ferrari are.
What stands out in that visualisation to me is that an Alfa with an alleged (on team radio) 20 points downforce loss on the floor, and a consequently adjusted front wing (so WAY less downforce) is still quicker than Kubica. Anyone want to take a guess as to who will take Robert's seat next season? Also (not sure if it was reported here): Perez with RP for another 3 years.
I can see Kubica still having the seat next year. Williams are so far behind replacing him wont make a difference and he is possibly still doing a job mentoring Russell and helping develop the car. Williams may need that experience to catch the field and putting a young pay driver in for short term gain may hurt the team much more come 2021.
There's no way Kubica, after the huge amount of time he spent out of single-seater racing, is giving Russell any kind of meaningful mentoring. I don't think he is even in a particularly good place to give much in the way of constructive feedback either - otherwise they'd at least have a "baseline" to work off by now. I think there's more going on behind the scenes at Williams, I suspect the engineering department is close to mutiny against Clare and either purposely sabotaging the car, or at the very least not actually bothering to look for improvements. There has been A LOT of talk about how toxic the working environment is at Williams, from as far back as when Rosberg and Webber were there!
