Once I heard he was ok I wound back to see what happened. He was shooting into the gravel trap upside down at quite a speed.
Well, that was a proper race. I was just about to congratulate Mercedes for not blowing the opportunity to pit under the safety car for once and then they hand Ferrari a free 1.5 sec advantage. Lewis was spot on at the end - they need to sharpen up all round.
Horrific crash, looks like the roll bar disintegrated so Halo definitely saved his life. Fantastic racing for the last 10 laps which were clean (except max pushing Mick off track). Glad Sainz got a win but hard to say he earned it on merit alone today
Kinda weird that of the 2 lap 1 incidents that Albon was the one airlifted to hospital... But again, testament to the safety gubbinz that Zhou walked away from that uninjured... EDIT: Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
Watching the notebook, Williams declined to comment. It's a corner that's basically flat out, even from a standing start he'd have been going a fair whack when he went nose first into the barrier. Then I think he whacked into another car, possibly ocon. Could well have concussion, maybe wrist/arm damage if he still had a good grip of the steering wheel.
yeah i heard that it was a suspected concussion apparently he was at the on-track medical facility, but was dizzy and disorientated so he was airlifted to hospital as a precaution ( most likely for a more involved scan as i dont think they have MRI machines on site )
Not F1 but... FIA really need to get rid of sausage kerbs... or else **** like this is gonna keep happening - Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
No it's not, you also had Abbie Eaton[?]'s back-breaking incident in W-series too. I hope not, but you get the impression the FIA are only going to do something about it when a driver dies.
Not that I propose keeping them, but what would you replace them with? Time penalties are incredibly dull and, since the FIA currently isn't minded to hand out meaningful punishments for ending the race of another driver, I can't imagine they would be punitive enough.
Place penalties. Get a black and white flag as a warning, then 5sec penalty, next time you have to slow and allow the driver behind to overtake you. Could really mess up your race if you'd got a big gap behind.
I'd try a penalty lane. Ideally the consequence has to be applied as quickly as possible and affect any positions gained as well as time gained. Having to take a slower route equivalent to a time penalty achieves both.
