To top off the craziness Stroll got a penalty for changing the rear wing meaning he had to start from the pit lane, but because all the cars started from the pit lane the stewards opted for a drive-through penalty which couldn't be issued due to the reduced 'race' so, in the end, he received 10s added to his 'race' time instead. The whole race day was just bizarre!
I do think the last few years of not giving a **** were trading on his performance from 10+ years ago, and not entirely merited. I liked him, but he's been irrelevant for years.
This was my immediate thought. Last thing you want with 20cars going into a corner at 200mph is someone who's switched off and doesn't want to be there.
can we get a session without a red flag? if only to pretend that racing f1 here isn't a monaco-level dumb idea.
Got to say if Max wins this I think he'll go all the way this year. Truly think this race will be pivotal for the season, whoever comes out top (Max or Lewis) will go on to win the championship.
Boring procession today? At least the Dutch got the result they wanted - they're very loud when I've met them at the Belgium GP (and all wearing orange!)
It looked like being an interesting tactical chess match, but red bull were too fast and both no2 drivers too slow to have any meaningful impact. Checo has gotta sort his quali out or he'll be the first driver fired for 2022 before the season even started!
Rb didn't send Perez out in time to complete a second lap in Q1, because they're Red Bull and of course that's what they'd do. But still, it's looking more an more like Max will take the title this year, six wins (and a half...), a seventh denied by bad luck. I do wonder if Mercedes haven't decided to put all the emphasis on the 2022 car. Honda/RB are clearly throwing everything at this year, it might be prudent to suffer this year to avoid damage to the next.
This year is Honda's last hurrah. And iirc Merc has already said they've stopped work on this year's car, though whether that's truth or just expectation management/excuse making.
Yeh, but he had been off the pace anyway. Maybe they're keeping him as a live development driver, get him testing stuff that may or may not work without disturbing max. Red bull through a lot of new parts on around the time of Austrian GP, only bee a few small track specific tweaks since. I imagine both will have significant resources on next year's car. That's why Horner was getting so pissy about merc ****ing up their cars and costing loads of damage, as development for next year's car that's done now, has to come from this year's budget.
