TELL MY MORTGAGE COMPANY AND LANDLORD TO STOP SENDING ME BILLS! Any other suggestions for fonts Nexxo?
I don't know about Nexxo, but as far as script fonts are concerned I like Zapfino. For something in the Steampunk variety "Kingthings Pique'n;meex" is kind of fun.
Zapfino is very nice, although a bit more 17th Century Regency. Kingthings looks a bit busy. How about Draughtswork? Fontcraft does a whole Steampunk collection. Linthicum is particularly good but you have to pay for it... Avoid Art Deco fonts. Common mistake, but it is not really Victorian, it's Edwardian.
Ooh, I haven't seen Fontcraft before. I'll have to spend some quality time there this evening. Edit: Technically speaking, wouldn't Art Deco be post-Edwardian Era? But you are correct that the Steampunk genre is thematically Victorian. Art Nouveau, on the other hand, is late Victorian.
I too will be spending some time there, and a quick look I think the 'Goodfellow' font would look nice on the proposed brass modders tool.
I haven;t had chance to look into fonts yet, but I did order enough Brass to make 4 Rulers... If enough people want them, I can order more. I will keep you updated
It's a bit fuzzy, and the late Victorian Arts & Crafts movement, which has a very Art Nouveau feel, kind of straddles the Victorian and Edwardian era. But you are right: Art Nouveau is from 1900 to 1910; Art Deco starts in 1920. The Edwardian era is from 1900 to 1920. Science and engineering started in Georgian times, although it did not really take off until the Victorian era. There is also a difference between the more utilitarian British and American engineering, and the more graceful artistic French and Italian stuff. My French antique microscope (a Hartnack & Prazmowski) is just prettier than my English models, or my chunkier German Carl Zeiss Jena 4b.
I don't think the last two fonts mentioned will work well with engraving. Remember that the heavy black areas will only be outlined. A fancy, swirly script will work well, though. ooh, The zaphino's not bad.
One of the things I like about the visual style of Steampunk is that it seems to be open to some interpretation from the creator's point of view. While heavily influenced by the works of Jules Verne and HG Wells (or at least the future as imagined during the Victorian/early Edwardian periods), it sometimes borrows elements from other periods - all the time trying blend the organic exterior with the industrial cog-works beneath. Sorry to derail this thread. I'm happy to defer to Nexxo's font selections; the idea was originally his after all.
I like Zapfino for the big font, I must admit. Perhaps Baskerville for the small stuff? Baskerville actually has its origins right here in Birmingham. It was designed by John Baskerville in 1757 as a culmination of his many experiments in printing, to invent a more legible font. In its time it won the admiration of people like Bodoni, Franklin and Fourier, all of who have had fonts named after them.
Hey guys, I got enough Brass to make 4 rulers, but mill is currently working under a hot deadline, so please give me a couple weeks before I can work on these.
Bill, I am sure that 'Tricorder Chic' deserves to be a higher priority than these rulers, I can't wait to see the finished product on that one, or for pic's of the brass goodness. I love my copper one, so Thanks Again
I wonder if former MOTM winners could buy the copper ruler with the MOTM engraving? The alum one is the handiest devil.
