Whilst I do not agree with needless violence being bestowed by anyone in general, I do also believe that we shouldn't just ban things for the sake of it - prevention being better than cure and all that.

Haven't they just raised the legal age for buying cancer sticks? Then AFAIK the legal age for buying fireworks is 18 yes? Then crank it up a notch, take the legal age for purchasing, and POSESSION of fireworks to 21, or better still, 25. That way, the people buying them (with any luck) should be a damned sight more responsible, and less likely to hand a bunch of fireworks to little sprogs. This would also mean people would have to attend more displays, or get together with friends and celebrate.

And I am not altogether unsympathetic to those of us who live in tower blocks etc, but lets face it, the likelihood is that something like this is going to happen wether you like it or not, short of the laws being changed.

Sorry buddy, but unless Mr. Brown in his infinite wisdom does something about it, we are going to be stuck like this....

Not sure it would work, a friend of mine called me over the weekend and was telling me how they had a competition to hit the top of a roof with the fireworks they had. This guy is in his 40's and has a university degree in Quantum physics. Stupidity is not he sole domain of the young.

I’d do two things, 1.) Stop the sale of fireworks from shops that sell alcohol, i.e. Supermarkets. 2.) Only allow fireworks to be sold during the week of Nov 5th from Saturday before to the Saturday after.
Banning fireworks completely would probably result in a large black-market developing of substandard, non-safety checked, knock of fireworks.

You've obviously never seen an episode of Jerry Springer. Ugly people breed. They breed quickly, and frequently.

go out there, pretend your crazy, and scare them away? or pretending your a predator might work pretty well too. You might get arrested, but those kids will learn a lesson.

go out there in a speedo, rub wax all over your body in sexual ways(legal isn't it?) and those damn kids will never be back! my bro's friend had a cop sitting in their driveway with the radar thingy clocking people(isn't that illegal?) so he went out with his underwear pulled into his arse like a thong and started rubbing vasoline on his nipples and groaning. The cop thought he was crazy XD

so id just try to scare them. Either scare them or have them be scaree of you :D

Call me old fashioned but I’d open my window yell "**** off or I’m calling the police" ... although not that kids seem bothered by the law anymore.

you'd probably get arrested yourself for disturbing the public peace or some thing rediculous.

The only problem I really have is the dog going beserk, so you shut her in and she pisses on the floor.

Naw more likely the kids will turn on you and firebomb your house with fireworks, then probably beat and stab you to death, this seems the norm these days :p

If fireworks were banned, do you really think this would not have happened?? Instead it will be a bottle filled of petrol pushed though the letter box and lit.

Generally most retailers only sell fireworks this time of the year. they dont generally sell them throughout the year which I think is a good thing. This limits the use of them constantly.

Fireworks are fun and I dont agree with banning them. If you want them banned because they keep you awake at night then lets ban cars. The amount of boy racers that wheel spin in my area and keep me awake at night is a joke. Cars also kill people every second of the day. Thats more serious I think.

Banning them is banning an age old tradition of remembering the gunpowder plot.

I can't stand the fact that even though it's only a few nights a year, the scrooge's out there want to ruin it for everyone.

Obviously the thread poster had a bad experience, young children playing with fireworks unsupervised till 2am does happen to be somewhat in the grey areas of the law...you could have just rung the police and it would have been dealt with.

The Uk needs a rise in vigilante justice in order to get the police off there arse and deal with the inbred lesser echelons of society. The reason people call for bans on things is because they could call the police when people overstep the mark, like kids harrasing people in a street, etc. But the cops don't do anything anymore so people would rather get rid of things like fireworks all together.

In concept, sure. In practice, age-restricting anything is always a miserable failure. Look at alcohol and cigarettes.

I hate fireworks. Never had a good experience with them. Big shows are the worst - when I was a kid I saw one go off in a guys face and blind him. Put me off them for life.

The problem is, Guy Fawkes Night (or rather letting off fireworks) now extends over a 3-week period from when they first appear in the shops until the last cut-price leftovers have been lit. That's nothing to do with "keeping up an age-old tradition", it's a long spell of cruelty to animals, hooliganism, and a public nuisance.
