    *^%$ &&£)$ ^$()_$$ (($&&*)")_$ $&*&£ £()*)$

If I could type fing symbols in fing caps I fing would.

I was going to start tweaking my new system, while I was at I thought I'd have a look at windows 7.

I needed to adjust my partitions to fit it on.

It rebooted fine into the partition programme

Half way through it bombed and my partition is gone.

Vista is gone. My data is gone

    different prgrammes give different info.
Some give the old partition size, some give the new partition size
Some seem to say no data.
    It blue screens on boot.
none of the recovery apps seem to offer any data/help/info

I'm normally quite good backups, but I'm not sure I've got everything. I think I did one 2 weeks ago, and I don't think I've done anything I can't afford to lose in that time.

Plus I got a digitaldown load of vista ultimate (digital river, via MS "ultimate steal")
So I need to check the files are correct and I need a copy of vista64 to upgrade from.

So I may have lost data.
and I've certainly lost 10+ hours reinstalling vista twice, updating and reinstalling all the usual guff, plus my steam games.
So no gaming for a few nights.
All for the sake of having a look at windows 7, sumut I dont really want or need.

    Absolutly FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFing fuming.

mild curiosty just totaly ruined the rest of the week.

To be fair I can't count how many times everyone says "Don't fiddle with partitions if you care about losing what's on them."

If you wanted to play with Windows 7 why didn't you just image your current Vista partition then do an upgrade over the top?

You said you did a back up... just restore from that back up.

No idea what you use to back up and restore, but I can format my boot drive, restore from a back up and be up and running as if nothing had happened in less than 30 minutes.

I'm not as 'clever' as everyone else here with their 'back in less than 30 minutes' solutions, but I just keep all my files on a seperate disk, and only the OS on the OS disk. Yeah I have to reinstall everything, but even then, I don't lose all my files.

I use a free copy of Easeus Partition Manager Pro I picked up a while ago to lay out partitions. Never had a problem (yet).

You have to be clever to buy a copy of Norton Ghost and install it? LOL

    My bad.....

I just remembered I did a full data backup and mozilla backup last week.
    I swapped out my P45 to a x58.
I backed every thing up expecting to have to reinstall windows.

So I had no relevent image for my new setup.

I dont tend to image my systems, mostly because they change so often an image is out of date in a month....
I do put all my data on a seperate physical drive to windows, and then copy all the contents over to a 1TB external drive every month or so.

ON the plus side, it's prolly better to do a reinstall as I'll have all the old drivers and stuff from the P45 on the old install.

Vista is sorting itself out and steam is installing my games for me.
I might even get a game tonight.

Still annoyed Paragon stuffed up though.

Steam can be restored by just copying the folder over from a backup - no reg keys. :)
