    Hi there,

Does anyone know if it is possible to, or tried to, blow acrylic? By that I mean the method used by glass makers to make bulbs, bowls, and many other interesting shapes. Granted, I'm sure it would weaken the acrylic if using cast and definately if it was extruded. More over I'm sure it would be very dificult to achieve even temperatures through-out long enough and consistently enough to produce a spherical shape.

All things considered, it would make for some interesting modding.

Blow molding of acrylic is the best way to make a sphere. I saw a video on youtube a few months ago but can't seem to find it. You do not heat the acrylic while molding. just heatup the sheet and put it in the molder.

I was looking for a method that didn't require a mold. This would allow you to form it on-the-fly. I've found a couple articles on glass blowing that might work with acrylic given temperatures are conistent.

I think that you may find that the margin between too cool, blowable and too hot is too small for successful use at home. What is it you're trying to achieve?

I'm just trying to come up with a method of doing it and letting my imagination flow.

Hmm well you can certainly blow mould acrylic and vacuum mould it too so I guess it should be possible. Perhaps you could build an oven that would control the temperature and allow you to work while it was inside the oven.
