Hello, I'm currently considering to purchase an internal Blu Ray drive. At the moment I'm running a Nvidia GTX 280 on an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard. My question is whether my (2 year old) motherboard will support Blu Ray or not. I've searched the internet but am yet to come up with a concrete answer, so I wonder whether all motherboards are compatible in which case my question is void ?. Can anyone help clarify the situation?. Cheers.
All you need is a Blu Ray drive - these use SATA cables so make sure that you have a SATA port free on your motherboard. Ensure your using the official Nvidia Forceware drivers for your graphics card so you have HDCP. Then finally buy some Blu Ray software such as Nero show time, Cyberlink Power DVD etc. That's the biggest hidden cost I find. There's no free player yet, and all the ones out there cost an arm and leg. But yepp, your good to go
When I got mine it was about 60 quid on Scan, and it came with a free copy of Power DVD 8. Power DVD 10 with the Blu-Ray compatibility is 79.99, but to upgrade from a copy of 8 is only 29.99, so the whole setup came to 90 quid. The only thing is you have to keep on top of firmware updates for the drive too, you can tell the technology's immature and has a long way to go with things like long pauses between chapters and the like. Updates are frequent though and it seems to be coming along in leaps and bounds.
