Simple as that, I don't think I should have to pay twice. I've already paid for the hardware.

    Blu-ray player software suggestions?

    What hardware you referring to?

If it's on a PC, I'm sure you paid less for the drive than a standalone player as the "software" is already on those hence the price

for the same reason that you had to pay for software to play DVDs when they first came out: nobody's written any free software for playing BDs yet. Suck it up and buy software or wait a year or so for it to get built into WMP/VLC

Slysoft are also working on a (free) player, they reckon they're about 50% there, but no timescales on when they'll be 100% there.

There's probably some free ripping software, you could always make an h.264 level rip and just watch it that way on your computer.

does the drive not come with player software?

all the DVD drives i've bought came with useless software.

why not just buy a bluray player? £60 for a blu-ray drive vs £99 for a Sony blu-ray s370 player with remote and all playback capability of PS3 (USB video, internet content) i think i'll choose the s370 (in fact, i did :D )

Yeah it sucks massively. BD codecs cost money to license as far as I'm aware, and as such there's no free option around right now; Microsoft could eventually include them as part of Windows but until then I'm using Cyberlink PowerDVD. To be fair, the fact that I can afford a BD drive and the films themselves gives me no grounds to start whinging about having to use 3rd party software to enjoy a high-definition luxury good.
