Hi everyone. A week ago, i posted here about i problem im having with my desktop PC. I'll try to sum it all up, and add the new problem into it aswell! The problem: One day last week, i was in a rush, and for the first time in months i did a force-shutdown. Apparently, this shutdown corrupted (hopefully) some of my data, and by hopefully i mean, the hardware should be intact. Microsoft article about my problem: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=307545 Reading this, and countless of other forum posts about this problem, it seems a Check Disk-scan will be able to fix it. However, i cannot enter windows, as the computer automatically reboots after i get the Windows loading screen. The day after i talk to a friend about this, and he tells me he had the exact same problem, which he was able to fix. He then tells me he used a boot-CD with an application called "Bart PE" on it. Apparently, you can boot from this CD, and run a check disk! Hooray, it seems my problems are solved. So i borrow the CD from him, run it on all 4 partitions of my harddisk, and reboots. Nothing happens. Hm, wierd. So i try to do a check disk on all the partitions again, and this time, im able to get to the windows log-in screen. Ofcourse i try to log in, but im only shown my background image and the cursor, so i reboot. Same thing happens, and i decide to leave the PC on as i can see that its still working from time to time (orange light on my cas blinking). 10 minutes later when i come back the computer is ready. Everything is normal, and it has logged in completely, great succes! As i didn't have time (or balls) enough to reboot, i decided to just play some games for 30 minutes. Ok this is when it gets wierd: I play for 30 minutes, turn of the PC (normally this time... Start > shutdown), and im off to work. When i come back home, im curious and i try to turn it on again, only to find out im back to where i started. Same bluescreen error message again . My question to you: I know im able to get into windows by running check disk on all my partitions, but this takes forever, and i DO NOT want to do this everytime i have to use my PC which is frequent. Is there any way i can replace some files in windows, when im logged in, so i don't get the bluescreen, or do you think it's my hardware thats broken? FYI: The main problem seems to be, that some 'hive-files' are lost/broken (located in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE). Hope you understand what im saying, it's a bit messy, and im very confused + tired Thanks in advance! - IK
Hives = registry files. I think, anyway. Have you tried following the instructions in that knowledge base article yet? (you do have a Windows CD, not just Bart PE, right?)
do this..... get another PC that has a floppy drive and make a MS-DOS boot disk. Then when you start the PC use the boot disk and run through the chkdsk. this is what i did anyway (or something like it.. it was with WIN95 so i may be a little off)
eh, you can do that but you'd run into problems probably since XP is NTFS, not FAT32. Pop in your XP disk, and try a repair install ... remember to back up your data just in case!!! another good option you should try first is to right-click my computer and go to properties, go to system restore tab and check "Turn off system restore on all disks" Restart and run your checkdisk until you can boot again, turn system restore back on, restart and see if it's fixed the problems. I remember from somewhere that the system restore will restore the last registry (hive) so essentially, you fixed it and windows broke it again for you (free of charge too! ) This is the reason viruses are a pain to get rid of in XP, system restore will just load em back in.. Give it a go and let us know
He can't get into windows so that won't work. Do you get to the boot point where you could get into safe mode? If you can (it's either F5 or F8 on most systems) you maybe able to run check disk in there
for chkdsk: boot from an xp cd and select the repair option. this brings you to the recovery console when you can run the chkdsk utility (run it with the /r to scan for bad sectors) alternatly, check your hdd(s) out using something like sea tools (from seagates website, also on ubcd) or spinrite - for physical problems
Thank you all for the answers! First of all, i CAN get into windows, it just requires that i chkdsk scan all my partitions first (~1-2 hours). @ capnPedro: I have both the bart PE cd, and the XP cd. However, my windows is (as far as i know) an OEM version @ Hells_Bliss: Ill try that. Don't know if system restore is on though, i dont think so. @ Mother gooser: I can get to the safe-mode screen, but as i press it, it just reboots, so not much help there. @ Golygus: I changed the HDD with another one, and it acted just the same, so i guess it's not that.
Ok wierd stuff just happend. I turn on my PC this morning, i checkdisk all the partitions with my BartPE cd. Then i get the bluescreen again, but decide to let the PC be. This means it have probably rebooted, and shown the bluescreen a few times, and then gone on to the log-in screen, which were there when i came back. I have no clue whats going on, but ill try to find out what kind of files are corrupted. Do you think i can get new registry files from somewhere? Say my laptop?
you can't move the registry about... if you copied it from your laptop, pretty much everything would not work properly. the hardware config, software configs detaisl, pretty much every thing is stored there. the only decent way to get a new one, is a Format and re-load Have you tried updated chipset (storage more specifically) drivers? If you can get hold of a copy of the older sea tools, made by on-tack, there is a test in it to check out the storage controller... just in case
yeah, the registry is unique to each system. If you can't get into windows or safemode anymore, then the only thing you can really do is to do a reinstallation, it will make a new registry for you, but you might lose your user profile.
Hah! Problem solved. I simply did a system restore on my PC, loading a point about 2 weeks old, and now everything works again. Thank you all for your help
