I've just bought a Nokia N70 and I'm looking to buy a bluetooth GPS reciever so I can use it for maps and directions when I'm backpacking around europe in a fortnight.

I'd probably quite like to get the official Nokia LD-3W - the cheapest I could find for it is £58.95. Does anyone have any idea how this compares with the likes of the el-cheapo generic recievers that are available? Anyone got any experience with these that could recommend a decent model that's a bit cheaper than the Nokia.

Also, what software do you use? Hopefully, I'll be able to budget for the tomtom mobile 5 software (which would just be a case of popping the MMC card into my phone, I believe).

As tomtom mobile is not available as a standalone app for the nokia, you either will have to buy the full TT kit (roughly £170 for the GB maps £200 for europe) or use different software.
Route 66 is available as a standalone package for both GB and europe (http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/9704.htm), though you'll also have to buy a rs dv mmc card, which is about £20 for a 1Gb card. Route 66 also has better map coverage than Tomtom (which although is the most popular, does not have as good as coverage as it's lesser known rivals)

The cheapo generic receivers are ok, just watch what chipset they use. The best chipset to go for is the sirf chipset, preferably sirf 3 though sirf 2 is more common. I can find no reviews of the Nokia module, though it's probably on a par with the other branded receivers (it's sirf 3 so should be ok) . The most popular receiver on the market would be the Globalsat BT338, it has good reviews, is sirf 3 and has good accuracy and battery life, but it's a bit more expensive.
