Heya Peeps, I'm gonna need to buy some nuts and threaded rods for my desk i'm making and I need to know what the sizes of bolts mean.. for example, M24, M6, M8. I can only assume thats the diameter in mm of the thread. If anyone can back that up i'd be greateful.
Yes, it is. So e.g. M4 is 4mm diameter. With screws, the second value refers to the overall length of the screw (inc. head), so e.g. M4 x 8 is 4mm diameter, 8mm length. BTW, if you're looking for quality stainless steel nuts and bolts, visit Inox Fasteners.
Sorry Nexxo, I was always under the impression that the second value is actually the "pitch" of the thread. ie M8 x 1.5 is an 8mm diameter thread, with 1.5mm between each thread, or 1.5mm of travel per turn of the screw. I do hope I'm right, coz I use M10x1.5 on my CNC and it's set up for 1.5mm per turn!
well.. that depends... sometimes it's the length of the screw and sometimes it's the pitch (distance between threads)... this is no problem though... if you go into a shop and it says 8mmx1,5mm it's obvious that it's the diameter and the pitch... who byts an M8 screw wich is 1,5mm long anyway? and the other way.. a M8 screw with 30mm pitch is WERY unlikely... actually i don't think that can be classified as a screw longer either then.. come on guys.. use common sense... Arien: don't worry about this... normally it's the length and diameter that is the right value... it's wery rare to take the pitch in consideration as this is in most cases the same for all of the different thred diameters... only special things like spark plugs and such things uses different...
Sorry chief, I wasn't trying to start an argument, just pointing it out! edit - and upon following the link that nexxo gave, I understand what he is getting at, as that particular company uses both variants to describe their products. Peace.
