bought an e machine last year and it has served me well for the last 12 months..couple of days ago it gave trouble booting and now wont boot at all...its running windows 7 and windows repair cant find anything wrong..its stuck on the screen just before you put in your password..is the hard drive gone
So the screen is black, but it loads that far into Windows? If your hdd is loading up to just before the password screen, I am doubtful of it being your hard-drive. Can you do a system restore or what capnPedro suggested? If you can get into safe mode then it's doubtful that there is something wrong with your hdd.
that would be indicated with safe mode as aero is disabled in safe mode. chances are there is a corrupt file somewhere, which if you can get in safe mode, then run cmd prompt as administrator, then type sfc /scannow, may fix the issue, if not try running system restore, to take it back to a point before you had the problems. if system restore/safe mode doesn't work, it would be easier to reload the machine.
thanks for the replies guys..i had to format and reload windows and everything is good ...just one issue..it takes about 5 mins to boot up..2 mins to password screen..1 min to desktop and another 2 mins to be able to use pc (blue circle activity icon on windows bar)...after that everything is fine...how can i speed up boot time???
If you've loaded a lot of software after installing Windows it might be worthwhile disabling memory resident crap that inevitably gets installed with some software... you can use msconfig but I prefer Autoruns for this purpose, it's very comprehensive. Additionally you can disable some unneeded services that run at startup, Black viper has a good guide on what you do and don't need. Be *careful*, you can b0rk your machine if you disable the wrong stuff, and programs can behave unpredictably/complain about needed services not running. All of the above may be a largely wasted exercise if the machine in question is of advanced vintage... what specs are we talking here?
