Not really a n00bish point, but somehow I've really borked my PC.

It started up with the DVI slot on the GPU going bye-bye, and then the GPU HSF gave up the ghost due to dust.
So, I stuffed a passive 6200TC in there wich was fine, until today when oh nos! My HDD when boom.

I've tried reformatting the HDD, (it still sorta works) and my PC gets half way through the re-format before it stops and resets itself.

So, any ideas apart from a new HDD? I don't want to have lost some 400Gb's of stuff.

(Now I'm stuck running on my server, XP1800 Power!!, 256mb, FX5200!

No, I think its just that everything is 2-3 years old now. The main issue is trying to get stuff of the HDD without booting into windows.

I have machines way older than that and they work flawlessly. Your machine borked due to poor maintenance. So the joke's on you. :D

get a live CD and a usb disk drive.

Either that or get a copy of ghost and get a new disk drive and clone the disk. Then just boot from the new one.

Mankz why have you formatted the drive if you want the information off?
