If I were to, hypothetically, put 12V through a 5V MO LCD... what would blow?
I'm thinking/guessing/hoping that some little replacable bit might have blown, but having had a look at it I don't see any nice little easily replacable bits.

So, anyone know what would happen if I did that... hypothetically, of course.. :worried:

Hypothetically uh ? The very thought hurts already, they cost a fortune... :waah:
Perhaps you should ask Henri, over at the MO forums, the (my) display's PCB only has SMD components.

Oh, I'm an expert as this (*cough*)!! The most likely thing is that the rs232 chip will pop (nice smell of burning) and the backlight or backlight leds will pop. The backboard will be fried, and IF you are lucky you may be able to salvage the screen part to setup as a parallel screen instead.

Having done this a while back , what happened to mine was that there was burning smell coming out of my top blowhole , when I got inside the case the power cable had melted but the lcd was fine :)

Ok imagine in this hypothetical situtation that there was no burning smell or noticeable burnt out parts, that the 12V was only apllied for a short while and then a proper 5V cable was tried but nothing happened...

Could that perhaps just be the LEDs?

Jeez, imagine if I'd really done something so stupid, I'd be so annoyed at myself...

    :duh:

no shame in it MrPlow... weve all stuffed 12v down a 5v line at some time or other!

would be a good idea to use 7V cable, thats too fine to take even 8 volts, that way the cable will burn out b4 the massive voltages blew anything, a bit like a fuse. or u could just use a fuse :D good luck on the MO, hypotheticaly, i feel for u m8 :D

I don't get why they wired it non-standardly, it's like they wanted people to mess them up. That kinda stuff really riles me up. I know it's my fault I put the wrong voltage through, but it would have been so easy for them to use a standard bloody pinout - if they are gonna use a standard connector, they shouldn't change what pins do what!

    Grr. Oh well.

I got a new one (at a much MUCH better value price btw) from modwarehouse.
    It's yummy.
