For God's sake... Doesn't the government (and the Daily Mail) see that these people help the economy? There's only a few hundred thousend, hardly anything. (edit: When did I go over 1000 posts? Oh well, yay for me.)
This is good news. The polski's were great, a shot in the arm for the countries labour markets. However, unemployment is starting to go up, it's actually not all that great in London now, where we used to have very low unemployment pretty much country wide. I'm of the opinion that we basicly shouldn't go looking for any serious number of extra workers for a good while, maybe even as long as a generation. Let the poles settle and integrate(a thing which they're sure to do, unlike certain groups) and then see the lay of the land.
Not sure how it is there, but here without the immigrints the economy would implode. Sure there are "natives", but good luck getting them to take a job such as agriculture or manufacturing.
As with anything, it's moderation that is the target. The current open borders can't be maintained, and closing the borders is complete folly. Unfortunately I don't trust this administration to find a way through the middle. CJM
i think this is a terrible and very very unfair idea.. basically only a few people can come into britain from romania and bulgaria.. but as many people as possible can come from other countries. if caps on migrants are needed you shouldnt just blame 2 countries yet openly admit other migrants. to me this just looks like the government pretending to give "the public" what they want but implementing it really badly. the country certainly isnt overrun with excess people. in fact if the media hadnt hyped this up so much no one would have cared or knew
I absoultely agree. We've had 600k come and live here, fill a need when unemployment was low but now it's starting to go up and we've had an influx of a few percent of the entirity of the nation restricting the low skill workers will mean less turn to crime or benefits when they can't find a job. Let those who've settled here, stay and integrate. Martin: it's because a fair fraction people from Eastern EU come here without a proper education other than low skill jobs. It's not saying not to let anyone in if they are highly skilled or have jobs already, but I see your point: why not Italians/Spanish?
Because the Italians and Spanish don't live in countries with significantly lower standards of living then the UK. Romania is a pretty poor country and large numbers of economic migrants to the lands of milk and honey(britannia, germany) are a certainty unless limits are set.
Its all well and good to impose restrictions on low-skilled workers immigrating to a country, but I think it can get a little dangerous when restrictions are put on people of specific countries. If its just Romanians and Bulgarians now what other nationalities will it be tomorrow? The government might be different in Britain to ours here in Australia - but I know If our government started making laws like this more restrictions on more people would be just around the corner.
But y'see, the problem is we've recieved about 500,000 poles since they get freedom of travel throughout the Eu. That number continues to increase daily. If the romanians and bulgarians could also move to the UK(and that'd probably be the destination of choice, for the UK has lower unemployment than most - so more jobs) then we could safely assume that could be another million or so from the two countries wouldn't be far off. This is with continually increasing polish immigration the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for whats happened over the past year or so - I think half a million poles have been great for this country in most respects. I just don't think the prospect of 2 million unskilled workers over say 10 years is a good thing.
Highlight the fact the economy is on a downward turn also, with few housing availabilities and unemployment getting higher means usually unskilled workers get laid off first. I still think students are this countries largest form of foreign immigration, so don't go listening to the daily mail
Oh indeed. Last I checked aussies and irish were still the number one and two nationalities of illegal immigrants to this country as well. You certainly notice the polish presence where I live though, the biggest city in my area has about 60k people, and about 50k poles have moved into the wider highlands aparently(it's basicly the most popular spot in Scotland it seems) - so there are a lot of 'em. I wouldn't fancy there being three times the number because of romania and bulgaria.
Well, it arrives at a point of diversity and integration. When it reaches a critical mass of people from the same community they often become self-segmented. In some ways, it works because it becomes a thriving community with lots of interesting shops and people, but in others it doesn't because the local people sometimes get forced out or ignored or there's racial tensions if there are few jobs etc.
Restricting immigrants based on education and how you perceive their living conditions? How high and mighty!
Under what criteria would you choose to accept or restrict immigrants? Or are you an advocate of the currrent free-for-all policy?
The number of Polish exceed 700K with 5k a week still coming. There is no stopping them and after 1 year working here in the UK they are entitled to benefits. They are quiting their jobs and claiming benefits. They are a drain on the NHS as the NHS cant even supplie the existing people never mind the hords or polish entering the UK. When the bulgarians and romainians start coming, if there is no cap then romainia will be a empty wasteland as they will all be here. Any british people claiming Job seekers allowance and out of employment that say they cant find a job are B**l Sh****s. They are lazy and dont want a job as 700K polish have found jobs. The british are lazy, fussy and think they are better than cleaning or working in McDonalads but rather scrounge instead.
There have been caps on other nationalitys. When the Sector Base Scheme was introduced to allow low skilled workers to come to the UK to work in the Hospitality sector, manufacturing sector etc the Home Office put quotas on each nationality to prevent 1 nationality filling up the sector. Bangladesh newspapers reported the fact that the Home Office was allowing so many low skilled people to come work here. THe Home office received millions of pray letters from Bangladeshies as pretty much everyone in Bangladesh wanted to come to the UK. If there was no cap then, Bangladesh would be empty. This scheme is now closed so no low skilled workers outside the EU are able to come to the UK now because the Polish have filled all the low skilled jobs and Romainia and Bulgaria will fill the rest.
