Link tells me at my postcode, and the calculated distance from the local exchange, the best I'll get on "up to 8Mbs" is 6.5Mbs, which is about what I'm getting from checks I've made. Disappointing, but maybe changing to a different ISP wouldn't help. :(

    How's it work for you?

The problem is that your speed is due to physical limitations, ie distance and cable quality.
I wouldn't imagine changing suppliers would yield any improvement.

Not very accurate, I know I could get 8Mb here but have 20Mb on cable. My mum gets 8Mb but it says max 6.5Mb. She lives over the road from the exchange!

Yup, to be honest the best way is to ask around. I'm lucky in that I'm a student, so could ask someone in a selection of houses round the area in which I'd be living about speeds obtained and suppliers..

I knew that, but I'm only 5 minutes stroll from the exchange so expected better. So the full 8Mb is near impossible? :waah:

I'm about the same distance and get 6.5 - 7 meg, on an 8 meg line the most anyone will get is around 7.5 tops.

"Up to 8mb" and I get 2mb lol. Still, at least I get a much better upload speed, which is all that counts really ;).

The 6.5 Meg is based on standard ADSL not LLU though, so that figure may well be correct.
The site doesn't list my exchange as having LLU either, even though I know Talk-Talk have equipment installed.

Says I can only get 4.5mb.

    I beg to differ:

only thing bad about virgin's cable is the peak hours 3gb cap, otherwise it serves me well.

im on BT and have had 8mb since it launched and for the first 10 months i used to connect at 7.7mb/s and im 1.2km from exchange (cable distance) wiche resulted in downloads of 800k/s.

however when BT started looking at Vision my speeds coincedently slowed to 6.6mb now im on 5.7mb/s

the conspiricy theorists may note thats exactly a 2mb/s drop, the same amount BT reserves just in case you are going to want BT vision.

i have wondered if swapping isp/s would bring my speed back, but i doubt it. i am actually very happy with BT appart from the fact the speed dropped, but its fast ebough for me.

i have complained to them about it and got noware, and after i started to complaine, my line test droped to 6mb/s from 7.5mb/s.

    me wonderes?

i've had the vm 4mb pack for years, the only time it drops below that is when i blow my cap, which is often enough to be a pain.

Best BRAS rate you can get is 8.128Mb/s which equates to 7.15Mb/s IP rate which is the best you can ever get. You need to be in spitting distance to get it, and have good cable. Else, you will get about 7.00Mb/s

Having a good chipset in your router also helps, one that supports MaxADSL helps greatly too..
router a - old standard adsl chip -sync speed 4.5BRAS
router b - new maxadsl chip - sync 7.0 BRAS

    same line. non maxdsl'd

I think it's safe to say that that cpemma posted just uses guesswork. It says my home line can get max. 6.5Mbps, fair enough, it's actually about that, but it also says my uni line has a max. of about 6Mbps - a couple of weeks ago it was connected at about 21Mbps (thank you very much Be*). :D

Yeah mostly crap I think, says I should be getting ~4.5mbit/sec here but synced at the full 8 and get 800+k/sec download speeds when the exchange isn't totally overloaded (gotta love total lack of LLU in an area with a high proportion of broadband users :()

Which bit of Mancs are you in? The Moss Side exchange (which serves allsorts of places in the centre) is LLU'd to the hilt, then again the one which serves M2 postcodes (down by Oxford Road station) isn't. Go figure.
