I was thinking of putitng this in the Network board but since it's not directly a network question, figured it would be better here. I've just been informed by a friend who works at the cable company here in town that they are going to be offering VoIP telephone service on their cable lines in February. I'm thinking about getting it when it's offered because at $35 a month, I'm supposed to get all calling features (voice mail, caller id, etc) along with 500 minutes of free long distance. Has anyone used this? How's the quality and all that? I understand how it works and the technology behind it, but have never used it myself.
Depends, our company sells proper VoIP telephone systems and except for the very occasional echo, you wouldn't be able to tell you were on an IP call. This is of couse based on having an IP Telephone and a Media Processor at the other end whose sole job is to compress and process IP calls. I can't remember the exact figures, but the actual bandwidth requirements to achieve PSTN quality are tiny.
