I currently live in what has been desricbed by men greater than I as 'The Devils Arse' or better by me as the backwaters of the middle of no-where . No cable companies will touch us with a barge poll . Is there ANY way that I can get a better connection than a normal phone line without expending huge amount on ISDN lines etc .
Also , is it possible to overclock modems ?
    Cheers

    lol

not as far as i know, as its limited to the phane line, if you have a 56k v90 then you should be getting 49kbps + connection which is ok for a modem you may find that removing unneeded phones in the house may speed it up slightly as too many phones connected to one line slows things down.

you might want to try your concil if enough people in your area want b band then they may be forced to get bt to run lines there.

    other options
move to where you can get cable/b band
    get satalite connection
    ISDN
get 9 additonal phonelines in your house and use them up for dial up networking and get the same rate as ASDL
just a few ideas some more pratical that others

SiliconHell - I am in the same position as you...

I have 768k one way sat, its good for downloading things - i get a rate of ~120k/s. Its known as SkyBooster, find it here - http://www.europeonline.com

As for ping time, the sat is no good, ISDN is our only option if we want a better ping for gaming ( I do ;) ) dont know if you game or not so that might not matter to you.

Any questions about the satellite, just ask :)

    So.......
Say I get the satalite thing .......
    A few things :

Do I pay for phnoe calls , at all ?
Can I still keep my isp (I have grown rather fond of AOL, despite its shortcomings (many and vaired)) ?
When you say that ping rate is bad , is that compared to Cable , or just generally ?
Erm ..... the site says that you can only get channel on 19.2 degrees , which according to the link means that I can only get channels from Europe , but no ENglish ones . Is this true ?

You still need the dial up as this is only one way sat.
The ping rate is bad generally :cries:
I've never tried watching the TV through it, and have just run up a large bill so will probably be cancelling it...

i know if you have 2 lines you can take 2 56k modems and dial them both up and somhow connect the 2 to your computer so you get a rate thats equal to 2 56ks....

It's very very easy to do with XP. Just install two modems, then go to Network Connections, right click on one and go to "Bridge Connection" or something like that.

Unfortunately you also have to have an ISP that supports/allows bridged modems. At the very least you'll probably have to call them up and ask them to set it up on your account

(I think it just requires them to allow two instances of your account to be logged in at once)

Yes I know this is possible but to do this you need a second phone line and a second modem which together costs more to setup than ISDN. Then the line rental of the two lines is more than ISDN aswell.

Of course i'm talking about BT, you maybe in other areas where you can get second lines cheap :)

Only other options would be some sort of wireless 802.11x access or a frame relay link. But from the sounds of your location you are in the same boat as me...frame way to expensive to even consider near me... the wireless tower going up near me (if you call 15 miles near) but it is still 45 days behind schedule (increasing in numbers daily).

ISDN is a 12month contract and £75 install though. I wouldnt want to be stuck in a contract @ 128k if ADSL does become available.

ISDN??? Mention a BRI to my telco and they just look at you like you just fell off a turnip truck....Not only is it not available...tey have no intentions of upgrading the CO to handle anything but analog lines....I thinkits only been about 6 months since they fired Mable (the gal that sat at the switchboard moving plugs around to connect calls).

    Come'on wireless!
