When trying to turn on my computer earlier, I switched on the mains and pressed the power button on the front as usual, nothing happened. I then checked the surge protector extension cable and the lights were green. So before removing the power supply I changed the mains cable (with the mains and psu switch off). I then switched back on the mains, then the switch on the psu at which point there was a loud pop and a flash out the back of the psu. I must assume it is broken? I only hope nothing else is. Any help would be much appreciated, Favst
new psu is required, but you won't know without trying a new psu wether anything else is damaged, unless there is something obvious on the board
Thanks Rich. Pretty much as I expected, nothing else looks bad but that doesn't mean too much with computers. I'll have to see if I can borrow one from somewhere. I'll contact xfx about it under the warranty too.
It was the xfx750w black edition, a bit ott for my rig but was on offer, about 14-15months old so just out of return to seller I believe.
Really?? That's interesting, I've had retailers insist they only cover the warranty directly for the first year and insist I send to manufacturer after that, it was only memory so cheap to send. For this being heavy though I will see what they say and if the return is UK based or not before arguing too much. Return price will be the same if its uk or to scan.
Good little article and video I like to link... http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theoneshow/consumer/2009/07/03/sale_of_goods_act_letter_downl.html Because you purchased it over a year ago the only problem is that it's your responsibility to prove that the PSU is faulty. As long as we can rule out silly things like dropping water over it and give reassurance it is in fact a fault that occurred following proper use of the PSU then by the letter of the law the retailer is obligated to offer a replacement or repair. Even in light of the above if XFX can still cover the problem with warranty it might prove quickier and easier to go through them first! Certainly can't hurt to try. Also ask if they'll cover postage to them for returning the faulty PSU.
Thanks for that blogins, I will certainly remember that. I should be able to prove its fault through the paper clip test easy enough. Its in a case under my desk and I rarely take drinks upstairs so I don't see how water could get in and nothing has changed relating to hardware or even software for weeks-months and I'm pretty sure a standard pc setup without mods is within warranty so it should be ok
The key thing is to just put it out of your mind and incur minimal expense in the replacement or repair of this PSU. Keep a copy of all correspondence relating to any RMA or if push comes to shove raise a dispute via the Sale of Goods Act 1979. It's only a PSU so not worth getting stressed about, just hope it hasn't fried any of your components. If it has then I would be tempted to push XFX for some form of goodwill gesture since it appears to be their PSU that was the root cause!
Yeah I won't worry too much, worst case I'll try push them for some replacement bits and use it as an excuse to hold out for socket 2011 or bulldozer in the new year. Not much free time since I started work and my laptop isn't too bad. +rep too btw.
Just thought I'd let you guys know, got a replacement, looks like a new one not a refurb but hard to tell I guess. Also its an 850w so a slight upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine which means I can now spend money on a screen and or SSD as I had originally planned rather than replacement parts.
I went through with xfx as I had already put a ticket in before your response. Seeing as they are both uk based the postage was the same anyway, they didn't want to cover it but it wasn't that much surprisingly so I didn't push it. There service was very quick, once they actually got it, sent a replacement out the same day.
