Is it possible to repair a subwoofer once it's blown? My subwoofer only plays bass intermittently, not continuously. The bass just kicks in at some points for a short blast of a few seconds and turns off again. I'm not sure if it's the bass itself which is broken or the connecting socket for the 3.5mm jack? If it is possible to repair, what do I need to do? This would be my first repair/mod, whatever you want to call it.. btw.. the subwoofer is part of a 2 satellite , 1 subwoofer package. So, it's a seperate housed unit.
Sounds kinda like it COULD be a connection problem Can you get the sides off? if so, then have a look inside!
Firstly moving this to electronics... ...next can you fix the intermitent problem by wiggling the wire, kicking the thing? If so see if you can work out where you need to wiggle/bash to make the unit switch on. Rob.
Indeed it does sound like connection problems. Somewhere I think a wire isn't fully connected. Since the subwoofer creates vibrations it might have loosened a connection somehwere. Although thats a pretty rare occurance, but it could just be a bad solder job. Open it up and look for any loose connections. If they are all secure, look for any physical damage to the subwoofer itself. Hope that helps.
I had the exact same problem with the sub in my car, the problem is likely to be the cable that goes from the connection point on the rim of the sub, that goes to the cone itelf. Mine has gone a couple of times because the cable is constantly moving about 2", my solution was to solder on a couple of "extra" cables with a larger loop.... works fine now.
I tried wiggling the jack about before but it didn't actually affect the subwoofer playback. It just seems like the subwoofer has a mind of it's own. I'll open it up later today and follow all these suggestions so far. Report back later, thanks.
Ok, I opened it up and basically everything is glued down! There's tons of glue! Anyway, the wires from the sub to the board seem to be connected fine as do the wires from the 3.5 . jack. Not sure how to check for signs of damage on the actual sub part - it's held down buy more screws but I can only see the nut ends not the screw heads. The metallic back of the sub has no signs of damage. What else can I do?
Try and put slight pressure, with your fingers, on the speaker as it is playing music. I have noticed, after a few blown subs in my car, that this will cause the sub to kick back on.
