First off - I wasn't sure where to put this thread, so apologies if it should go elsewhere. Here's the story: my friend had a Creative Zen Touch (20gb) that he never used and - knowing that I had 120+ CDs recently stolen - was very kind enough to give it to me. Buuuuut, I'm having some trouble with it.

First off - he couldn't find the power or usb cables for it. And the battery is dead. Sooooo I can't tell if it work or not. He said it worked last time he tried it and it looks to be in GREAT condition.

According to the manual on the CD, it can be charged via a 5v power charger (it says not to use anything other than the official one) OR via the usb cord.

Soooo - I've got one of those "multi-functional" chargers that has a slew of different connectors and can change voltage output. Problem - no 5v. Only 4.5 and 6v. And I've got a usb cable (A to B mini), but I'm not sure if it has the power lines or just data lines in it. (According to the manual, the power button should glow blue when charging and an icon should display on the screen - neither happen).

(Sorry, I know this is long) I'd prefer not to buy cords if I don't know if it's working for sure, so what can I do? Tough it out and fork out the money?

Well, I know the ports have it standard, but some cords don't. And since the cord I'm using is for a digi cam that requires you to power the camera on, I'm speculating this might be one of those cables.

But if it's not, then something's wrong with the player itself. If that's the case, should I contact Creative? Tear it apart (with or without the intention of repairing it :) )?

I can't say I've come across a USB cable without the power lines. Use a multimeter to test the two outside pins - you should get 5V off those.

The one to the digicam probably work, since those mostly are standard. If there's no power lines, at least it wont break ;)

Yea. Plug it into any PC and itll charge. If your battery is VERY dead, then you'll have to leave it a good half hour before you switch it on to charge enough. Zens arent clever enough to take power from the plug first, battery afterwards I found with my micro

So, Bindibadgi, if I do just leave it plugged into a USB port, will it eventually charge? Because I contacted customer support and they gave me the impression that if the battery were completely dead, it wouldn't be able to charge from the USB port.

Eh, I'll just plug it in and give it a try to see what happens. Hopefully this will work because it's a free mp3 player and I'd love for it to NOT be a free b0rked mp3 player :'(

    *EDIT*
Also, just to clarify - when I DO plug it into the USB port, the power button does NOT glow blue, nor does any icon (or anything for that matter) show up on the screen - both of which should happen according to the manual on the CD.

    Remove battery, check the contacts.

You could try turning it on in to diagnostic mode (remove battery, hold power on and reinsert battery, if i recall).

Yeah, Deathrow - I suddenly had an amazing ephinany while in class today - check the $(#*# battery!!

I'll check it when I get home (damn night classes).

I'm wondering though - assuming the worst and it's just dead, can I at least salvage the hard drive from it and use it like a normal one (assuming it's not also dead, and I do realize it'd be a laptop HD, so I'd need converters, etc.)?

    *EDIT*
Perhaps if it's the battery just being dead, I could replace it. They look to be fairly cheap on eBay here
